Lot 220.  Remarkable Collection of 2,300+ Photos of 19th and 20th Century Teams. PLEASE NOTE: The photos in this collection show teams as early as the 1850s. They were printed at various times in the 20th century. This collection comes from the estate of a New York broadcaster who wanted to obtain a photo of every major league team, player, manager and umpire. It begins in the 1850s and continues through the 1980s. More than 300 teams are pictured on George Burke or George Brace real-photo postcards. Routinely, Burke and Brace reproduced others’ photos, and almost all of these photos are reproductions. The breakdown includes approximately 600 8” x 10” photos, including many glossies, 75 larger than 8” x 10” and about 1,600 4”x 6” or smaller. Except for the Burke and Brace postcards, most of the smaller photos were neatly cut from baseball guides and magazines. More than 175 photos show 19th century teams. Sixty are Burke-Brace postcards, and five are 5” x 7” colorized Bra-Mac prints, including one of the 1898 Louisville team with Honus Wagner. Most of the others are from magazines. In addition to the team photos, the collection includes about 2,500 photos of individual players. Modern cards and magazines are the source of these photos; most fit into nine-pocket pages. The overall condition is ex. These photos will serve as outstanding reference material for the winning bidder. We have conservatively counted the individual items here at more than 5,000. We’ll also start the bidding conservatively at $1 per Burke-Brace photo.
Winning Bid $711.

In another original INS 7” x 9” wire photo, Campanella is forced out at second in the 1954 All-Star game. Chico Carrasquel is also shown in this ex to ex-m photo that has creases in two corners. The two other wire photos were reissued upon Robinson’s death in 1972 at the age of only 53. One from 1948 shows him on sliding into home on the front end of a triple-steal against the Boston Braves. Brooklyn’s Billy Cox, Boston’s Bill Salkeld and umpire Jocko Conlan are in the 8” x 10” vg-ex photo, which has creases at the top outside the central image area. Lot 224.  60 Negatives of Ted Williams by Don Wingfield from a 1971 Topps Photo Session. Outstanding collection of 60 black & white negatives and four color slides by the Washington, D.C. photographer. During baseball’s “Golden Era,” Wingfield worked for The Sporting News, the Washington Senators and Topps. He also freelanced for dozens of outlets, including Life, Look and other major national magazines. Using the results of his work, he produced a series of postcards of players from 1955 through 1960. These negatives and slides, taken during a 1971 session for Topps, will yield as host of enjoyable and collectible photo images of the Splendid Splinter as manager of the Senators.
Winning Bid $75.

Lot 229.  Babe Ruth Original Circa 1940s Vintage 8” x 10” Sepia Photo. A smiling Babe and two smaller men pose outside the Hilltop Restaurant, which specializes in “steak & chicken dinners.” The photo is slightly colorized, with red added to the men’s cheeks and blue added to a man’s tie and the restaurant sign. There is a crease in the sign, lesser creases primarily toward the border and several tiny scuffs in the lower left. This photo should give the winning bidder at least one good smile a day.
Winning Bid $138.

Lot 231.  Joe DiMaggio in a 1943 Army Panoramic Photo. On Feb. 17, 1943, DiMaggio enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces. This 10” x 30 ½” photo shows him a month later, on March 16, 1943, as part of a squadron at Santa Ana Army Air Base in California. DiMaggio is clearly visible in the top or back row, sixth from the left. The sepia photo shows excellent contrast and displays well. Up close, it shows a series of vertical creases about every 1 ¼” that extend from the bottom as much as about 5” into the photo. The creases, apparently created when the photo was rolled, are not evident from several feet away, and they are well away from DiMaggio’s image. The photo is in a vintage frame that shows its age. Unusual collectible featuring the Yankee Clipper.
Winning Bid $110.
