 Lot 134. Rare Copy of 1888 Sketches of the New York and Brooklyn Base Ball Clubs. June Rankin wrote the text and Richard K. Fox published this 64-page softcover publication that covers the Giants of the National League and the Trolley Dodgers of the American Association. Fox also published the Police Gazette. In 1888, New York captured the N.L. pennant, and Brooklyn finished second behind St. Louis in the American Association. The book has a woodcut print of an early baseball game on the brown front cover. The covers are almost separated from the pages and show multiple chips; there is tape along the spine. Inside, the book presents the 1888 N.L. and AA schedules and an 11-page history of baseball beginning in the 1840s. The Giants are then represented by woodcut photos and biographies of manager Jim Murtrie and 19 players, including John Ward, Tim Keefe, Mickey Welch, Buck Ewing, Roger Connor and James O’Rourke. Seventeen members of the Brooklyn club are featured, including Bob Carruthers, Dave Orr and Dave Foutz. The bottom outside corners of the first 30 pages have been either chipped or turned up (creased). The text is unaffected, and the pages otherwise are generally clean and attractive.  Lot 135. Scarce Copy of the 1947 Book The Washington Senators by Morris A. Bealle. Ex 196-hardback subtitled An 87-Year History of the World’s Oldest Baseball Club and Most Incurable Fandom. It has blue boards with gilt lettering on the spine. The front of the dust jacket has a 4” tear and some edge chips, and the front flap is present but detached, There also are edge chips along the spine and back of the dj. Bealle traces the history of baseball in Washington from the 1860s. The book is well illustrated, and the inside pages are ex-m.

 Lot 136. 1989 Report to Major League Baseball on Pete Rose’ Gambling. By early 1989, Rose’s gambling had become a public issue. In response, MLB Commissioner Peter Ueberroth retained a Washington, D.C., law firm to investigate the gambling allegations. By the time the report was submitted on May 9, A. Bartlett Giamatti had replaced Ueberroth. Prepared by trial attorney John M. Dowd, the 225-report identifies Rose as a compulsive gambler who bet on baseball games in 1985, 1986 and 1987. The details that led to Rose’s ban from baseball are in this copy of the report in photocopy form, as it was provided to MLB.
