Baseball Autographs   52 Lots       »

Lot 2.  Lou Gehrig Autograph on the Sweet Spot of an OAL Harridge Baseball. Gehrig signed this ball in either 1936 or 1937 with more than 20 other New York Yankees. With time, the autographs have faded. The Gehrig signature remains the strongest, and its appearance is supported by the ex-m to nm off-white ball which retains strong pre-printed areas. The signature is light with all letters remaining visible. Its appearance is a strong vg-ex 4 or a somewhat weak ex 5, without any smudges or other defects. Signatures on the north and south panels are completely faded; impressions remain. Other signatures are visible on the east and west panels: Joe Glenn, Kemp Wicker, Art Jorgens, Jake Powell, Walter Brown, Bump Hadley, Johnny Murphy, Frank Crosetti and Bob Seeds. They range from vg 3 to ex 5, with most 4-5 but somewhat lighter than the Gehrig autograph. Gehrig’s remains a highly-sought autograph that is in relatively short supply. This is a very decent, affordable example. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $1,433.

Lot 3.  1932 Senators Team Ball Signed by 18 Including Walter Johnson, Moe Berg. As the manager, Johnson guided Washington to a 93-61 finish and third place in the American League. His signature is an ex 5 to ex-m 6 on a 1932 OAL William Harridge baseball, which has red and blue stitching and is nm. It stands out well against the off-white ball has never been shellacked. It has strong nm-m pre-printed areas, minor toning spots on each panel and a larger area that is toned or stained on the south panel. “Season 1932” was added to the far end of the west panel. Johnson shares the sweet spot with Ossie Bluege (nm 7 signature), Gen Crowder (5) and Bill McAfee (6). Al Schacht (7) and Mo Berg (ex-m 6) are on the west panel; Joe Kuhel (7), Monte Weaver (5-6), Eddie Ainsmith (5) and Johnny Kerr (5) on the east; Heine Manush (nm 7 to nm-m 8), Roy Spencer (7), Firpo Marberry (6-7), Ed Edelen (6-7) and Sam West (6) on the north, and Lloyd Brown (5-6), Carl Reynolds (5) and Joe Cronin (6) on the south. The ball also has the names of Pat Gharrity and Ed Gharrity printed on side panels. Both apparently identify Senators coach and former player Edward Patrick (Patsy) Gharrity. Berg, of course, was the intellectual catcher who IQ may have been higher than his lifetime batting average. He served the U.S. as a spy during World War II. Scarce, attractive and very collectible with three Hall of Fame signatures, and Berg and Schacht as well. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $888.

Lot 156.  Sandy Koufax Autograph with an Original “This Day in Sports” Cartoon. The Koufax signature is gem mint 10, apparently on an unlined index card that is double-matted to 10” x 18 ½” with original cartoon art by Lenny Hollreiser. Copyrighted in 1973 by the New York News, the cartoon commemorates Koufax’s single-season strikeout record of 382 set in 1965. The cartoon, which is 5” x 10”, and the autograph constitute an impressive display. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $163.

Lot 157.  Maris, Flood and McCarver Signatures Authenticated by JSA on a 1969T Card. James Spence authenticated the card, #164, and Beckett Grading Services encased it. The Roger Maris autograph is a beauty, a bold gem mint 10 over an image on the card that shows him with Tim McCarver and Curt Flood. The McCarver signature grades nm 7, and the Flood, ex-m 6. The card is vg-ex. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $572.

Lot 158.  Satchel Paige Yellow Plaque HoF Postcard Nicely Signed and Perfect for Display. Paige signed on the top margin, and the autograph is bold, an nm-m 8 and less than a 10 only because of some minor sharpie “bleed” on the glossy surface of the postcard. Most consider Paige the greatest of all Negro League pitchers, and some claim he is the best of all hurlers from any league. His is one of the tougher gold plaques to acquire, and here is a beauty! Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $148.

Lot 159.  Rare Autograph of Stanley Coveleski as “Stanislaus Kowalewski” on a Baseball. Extremely rare version of his signature using his birth-name on an unofficial ball that is ex-m to nm, off-white to white with a few very small brown spots. Coveleski died in 1984, and single-signed balls from him rarely surface. This one was signed for a long-time baseball writer and comes with his letter attesting to the fact that he handed the ball to Coveleski and asked him to sign it specifically using his birth name. Coveleski then printed his name so large that it spans two panels and travels through the sweet spot. The printed signature in red is nm-m 8 to mint 9 and stands out well on the ball. It may take a lifetime of searching to find another! Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $218.

Lot 160.  Sandy Koufax Signed ONL William White Baseball. Bold gem mint 10 autograph on a mint ball. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $218.

Lot 161.  Mickey Mantle Signed OAL Ball Authenticated by Upper Deck. Gem mint 10 signature on the sweet spot of an OAL Bobby Brown baseball, which is nm with several small, light spots of discoloration. An Upper Deck hologram label is on the west panel, and it is accompanied by a matching Certificate of Authenticity. The ball is in an Upper Deck cloth bag. Authenticated also by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $390.

Lot 162.  OAL Ball Autographed by Mickey Mantle and White Ford. These Yankees heroes and friends signed an OAL Bobby Brown ball that appears to be game-used. The printed areas are strong, and the toning is generally even. Both signatures are bold gem mint 10s, Mantle on the sweet spot, and Ford on the south panel. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $180.

Lot 163.  Willie Stargell Autograph Collection – 1979 W.S. Ticket, Bat, Ball, Mini Helmet. Stargell was the MVP as the Pittsburgh Pirates won the 1979 World Series, and his signature is on a two-part ticket stub for Game 7 of the series. The stub is nm, and Stargell’s signature, nm-m 8. The other signatures are gem mint 10s – on an ONL Coleman baseball, a Riddell Pittsburgh Pirates mini helmet and a Rawlings Adirondack Big Stick 34” Professional Model. The three signed items are at least nm-m. The 1979 Pirates were the “We Are Family” team that made Sister Sledge famous, or maybe vice versa. These Pirates were also the last team to win a major sports championship in enemy territory until the Pittsburgh Penguins equaled the feat this year in Detroit. Stargell’s home run off Jim Palmer won the 1979 World Championship for Pittsburgh. Autographs authenticated by Kevin Keating. The signed ticket is rare and worth a premium bid!
Winning Bid $148.

Lot 164.  David Wells Autographed Baseball, Perfect Game Ticket Stub and Display. Wells’ signature is a mint 9 on the sweet spot of an OAL Budig baseball. The ticket stub, which is ex, is framed to about 15” x 21” with a May 18, 1998 Newsday color page that celebrates Wells’ perfect game. Facing the Minnesota Twins the day before, Wells had pitched the 13th perfect game in baseball history. He was already 34-years old before he found success with the New York Yankees in 1997. From then through 2005, he won 137 games while losing only 67. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Minimum Bid $50.

Lot 165.  Ted Williams Autograph on the Sweet Spot of an OAL Bobby Brown Baseball. Beautiful gem mint 10 signature on a mint ball. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $240.

Lot 166.  Schalk, Waner, Roush, Ruffing, Sparma Signed “Home of Cooperstown” Baseball. This ball creates a number of possibilities for display. For example, Joe Sparma alone signed the west panel, and with just a little finesse, his signature alone can be displayed. Sparma is a tough, deceased member of the 1968 World Champion Detroit Tigers. He won the game that clinched the A.L. pennant for Detroit. In 1986, a heart attack claimed his life at the age of 44. His signature is ex 5 to ex-m 6. Hall of Fame center fielder Edd J Roush has the sweet spot to himself. Ex-m 6 to nm 7. The south panel displays well with Hall of Fame members Lloyd Waner and Ray Schalk, along with H. C. Buckingham. Schalk’s signature on any ball is very uncommon, and on this ball, it displays as nm-m 8, the strongest of the HoF signatures. The Waner autograph is a 6-7. The ball is signed also by Pat Dobson, Denny McLain and Earl Wilson on the north panel and Red Ruffing and Marty McHale on the east. There is a stray “v” on the Ruffing signature; otherwise, these five signatures are ex 5 to mint 9, with the McLain and Wilson autographs especially strong. The ball is lightly to moderately toned and soiled (small brown spots) in places. Interesting ball with many possibilities! Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $185.

Lot 167.  OAL Ball Signed by HoF Multiple-No-Hit Pitchers – Ryan, Koufax and Feller. Nolan Ryan pitched seven no-hitters, Sandy Koufax 4, and Bob Feller 3. Their signatures are 10s on an nm ball, Ryan on the sweet spot, Koufax on the north panel and Feller on the south. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $185.

Lot 168.  Baseballs Signed by 4 No-Hit Pitchers – Nuxhall, Downing, Browning, Greene. Joe Nuxhall, Al Downing, Tom Browning and Tommy Greene each autographed the sweet spot of an Official Major League Selig baseball. Each added the date of his accomplishment. The signatures in ballpoint are 9s and 10s on mint baseballs. The autographs come with a Letter of Authenticity by PSA-DNA and have been authenticated also by Kevin Keating. You could start or augment your no-hitter collection for as little as our
