Non-Sport Cards and Albums   39 Lots       »

Lot 348.  Circa 1888 A1 Allen & Ginter “Birds of the Tropics” Album. Harris Lithographers produced this 12-page album, including covers. The album contains the same ornate artwork of 50 tropical birds used for the N5 card set. This copy of the album is unusual because it is bound in a separate cover typically used by libraries. The album itself is complete. The lower right corner of the front cover has a crease that is reinforced on the inside with vintage tape. The back cover has some damage along an edge from the secondary binding. The inside pages tend to have creases along the spine and otherwise are ex. Overall, very clean and vg+ to vg-ex.
Winning Bid $152.

Lot 349.  Circa 1890 A6 Allen & Ginter “World’s Decorations” Album. More accurately and completely, this album is titled “50 Decorations of the Principal Orders of Knighthood and Chivalry of the World.” It contains artwork of 50 medals and awards given by various nations. The same artwork was used for the N30 and N44 card sets. Unlike many albums, each page is printed on both sides. The backs contain text describing the award. The U.S. is represented by the Badge of the Society of Cincinnati. Technically, the album is vg+ to vg-ex, but the grade doesn’t do it justice. Still held together by the original string, the pages are clean with a crease, generally outside the image area containing the cards, in the lower right corner and along the bottom edge. Lindner, Eddy & Clauss of New York is the lithographer.
Winning Bid $92.

Lot 350.  Circa 1889 A9 Allen & Ginter “Game Birds of America” Album. The bird paintings used here are especially elaborate and ornate. Many of the birds are shown in flight or in motion. The artwork surrounding the cards is impressive. Geo. S. Harris & Sons was the lithographer. The same paintings are used in the N13 and N40 card sets. The album, labeled “Second Edition,” shows paper loss on the outside front and back covers. The inside pages, bound by the original string, are vg+ to ex with a small, light crease in the lower right corner.
Minimum Bid $75.

Lot 351.  Circa 1890 A20 Allen & Ginter “George Washington” Album. Unlike many of these albums, this one is unrelated to a card set. The front cover is missing; the back cover is p-f. Each of the nine inside pages contains four colorful, detailed images representing various aspects of Washington’s life. He is shown at Valley Forge, crossing the Delaware and being sworn in as U.S. President. The backs of the pages contain descriptive text. One inside page is loose; otherwise, they are vg+ to ex.
Winning Bid $35.

Lot 352.  Circa 1890 A21 Allen & Ginter “Napoleon” Album. This 11-page album contains scenes from Napoleon’s life and rule 1798-1821. Each page has an elaborate, detailed scene in color with descriptive text on the back. The front cover is loose and has a chip in the lower right corner, a small stain and a name lightly written on it. A name is on the back cover as well. About half of the inside pages are loose. Otherwise, they are vg-ex. This is one of the most attractive of the 19th century albums.
Winning Bid $92.

Lot 353.  Circa 1889 A26 “Costumes of All Nations” Album with Langtry and Russell. This magnificent album contains color portrait paintings of actors and actresses wearing stage production costumes representing numerous countries. It reproduces 100 cards from N70 and N71 sets. The paintings used for the cards are outstanding, and the album is even better because it has full-page lithographs of four actresses, including Lillie Langtry, Lillian Russell and Mary Anderson. Knapp & Co. of New York was the lithographer. The front and back covers show soiling and corner and edge chips. The inside pages are clean with tiny corner creases, vg+ to ex and very close to ex.
Winning Bid $100.

At 3” x 5”, these cards are close to postcard-size. The detail in the artwork is impressive. The “Atlas” cards are Colorado vg-ex, Michigan vg-ex and Virginia vg. The “History” cards are Colorado vg, Pennsylvania vg, which pictures Ben Franklin, and New York vg-ex. These cards generally look better than the grades indicate, and they frequently are found in much lower condition.
Winning Bid $50.
