Lot 271. 15 1922-24 Mid-Week Pictorials - Football Boxing, Olympics, Golf, Tennis Photos. Complete issues of the weekly New York Times tabloid, most with 24 pages. The Summer Olympics are the topic of two-page spreads in two 1924 issues. A related full-page photo shows Helen Wills, 1924 tennis gold medal winner. Two editions have football covers: Walter Taylor, NYU captain and Bill Mallory, Yale captain. An Army-Navy game photo occupies two pages. Boxing receives extensive coverage. There are four full pages on the upcoming Firpo-Dempsey bout and pictures of Greb, Johnny Wilson, Carpentier (full page), Leonard, Ciriqui and Willard. A 1924 issue has two pages on the U.S. Open Golf Tournament won by Cyril Walker. Elsewhere, photos capture Walter Hagen and Gene Sarazen. Track and field is represented by Charles Paddock in multiple photos. The Sept. 21, 1922 issue has a rare photo of an African-American athlete, Dehart Hubbard, a broad jumper from the U. of Michigan. Other interesting figures are Roald Amundsen, discoverer of the South Pole, and Mary Pickford. Most issues are separated at the spine, and the paper is brittle with edge chips and tears. Most photos are unaffected, or only minimally affected. Some covers have pencil notations.
