Lot 542.  1945 Street & Smith’s Pictorial Baseball Yearbook. A rare and desirable publication from the war years, this copy is an ex beauty that is loaded with photos. Several New York Giants at spring training are shown on the cover.

Lot 545.  Willie Mays Publications Collection Including a Scarce 1952 Comic Book. The comic is the Thrilling True Story of the Baseball (New York) Giants, which tells the story of the Giants’ climb from last place on Aug. 12 to the N.L. pennant, captured with Bobby Thomson’s “shot heard ‘round the world.” Mays is on the cover with other Giants. Vg+ copy with a light vertical crease. We sold a similar copy earlier this year for a bid of $75. 2. Lot 547.  5 1950s Comics with Wheaties Baseball Star Ads + 2 Additional Back Covers. All ads are on the back covers and feature a player photo. Three are from 1953 Lone Range comics: 1. June with Phil Rizzuto in the ad, vg-ex. 2. Aug. with Yogi Berra, vg. 3. Sept. with Stan Musial, vg-ex. Also, 4. May 1954 Walt Disney’s comic, Al Rosen, ex. 5. Aug. 952 Tom and Jerry comic with Ralph Kiner, ex. 6-7. The back covers only have George Kell in one ad and Robin Roberts in the other. Ex. All except Rose are members of the Hall of Fame.

Lot 548.  6 1950s Issues of Baseball Magazine or Sport Plus an Inside the Majors Paperback. Four of the monthly Baseball issues are from Aug.-Sept. 1953. They average vg-ex; three have a news stand notation on the front, the Oct. issue has minor cover scribbling, and all have a stamp with the owner’s name. The March 1955 issue, which is g-vg, has Connie Mack on the cover with the headline “The End of an Era.” Bobby Thomson is on the cover of the May 1955 issue of Sport. There is an apparent news stand notation; otherwise, vg+. Joe Reicher, baseball editor for the Associated Press, is the author of Inside the Majors, a 192-page magazine-sized paperback that profiles one player or more for each major league team. Vg cover, ex contents, and nicely illustrated.

Lot 549.  12 Mostly 1950s Periodicals with Mickey Mantle Covers + 16 Ads. The class of this collections is the June 18, 1956 issue of Sports Illustrated, which has a Hy Peskin close-up of Mantle on the front cover. A four-page Robert Creamer article focusing on Mantle follows inside. Ex to ex-m copy with a mailing label and minor foxing along the right edge. The following publications have Mantle on the front cover unless otherwise noted: 2. Aug. 1953 Inside Baseball, eight-page article inside, vg. 3-4. 1956 (vg) and 1957 (vg-ex_ True Baseball Yearbooks. There are four double-page ads, including Viceroy, Phillies Cigars and two different in Boy’s Life for the National Youth Sales Club. Ex-m overall.

Lot 550.  11 Hardbound Baseball Dope Books, 1963-77, from The Sporting News. All of these annuals except the 1971 edition are in bound in similar brown marble covers; the cover for 1971 is somewhat different. The hardcovers average ex-m, and the issues, nm. The issues are from 1963, 1965-67, 1969, 1971-73 and 1975-77. Dope Book covers include: 1963 Don Drysdale, 1967 Triple Crown Batting Champions (Mantle, Cobb, Gehrig, 7 others), 1969 Rose, 1973 Aaron and 1977 Munson.

Lot 551.  3 1974 Newspapers Focusing on Hank Aaron’s Record-Breaking 715th Home Run. 1. The New York Times, April 9. Aaron appears on the front page and elsewhere in this complete issue. The headline reads “Aaron Hits 715th, Passes Babe Ruth.” Vg-ex. 2. New York Daily News, April 9. Aaron appears on both the back and front pages as well as inside this complete issue. The headline reads “715! Henry Does It.” Vg-ex. 3. Newsday Special Section, April 7. This vg eight-page section chronicles Aaron’s 714 Home Runs. It also features a picture of Babe Ruth and two articles about him.
