Lot 429.  15 Original Issues of Lew Lipset’s Old Judge Newsletter Including the First. Lew remains one of the top very few contributors to the development of baseball card collecting. Beginning in the spring of 1985 and continuing well into 1994, he published a periodic newsletter in which he updated checklists, traced the history of various card issues and provided commentary, often controversial, on the status of the hobby. This collection includes the first issue, as well as issues 9 from 1987; 25 from 1989; 31-33 from 1990, 35 and 39-41 from 1991, 42-46 from 1992, 47/8 1993 and 50 (the last issue) for 1994. There also is a photocopy of issue 26 from 1989. Average read issues with writing on one.

Lot 433.  Run of 36 Issues of The Vintage & Classic Baseball Collector, 1995-2003. For most of a decade, this magazine served as an important resource for collectors of vintage baseball cards. Dennis Purdy Sr. was the editor and publisher from the debut issue in March 1995 through issue #23 in Dec. 2000. Don Betz then took over the publication. This collection includes issues 1-36 (July 2003) plus #37 from June 2004. Ex to ex-m.

Lot 526.  1903 Tip Top Weekly with a Baseball Cover and a Boston Beaneaters Team Photo. Cover art is for Frank Merriwell baseball story by Burt Standish. Inside the back cover is a photo of the Boston National League team, which changed it nickname from Beaneaters to Braves in 1912. Future Hall of Fame pitcher Vic Willis was a member of the team. Vg-ex with a stain along the spine.

Lot 527.  Magazines with Baseball Covers: 5 Pre-1960 Collier’s, 6 More – Greenberg, Etc. Four Collier’s covers feature some of the best illustrations this side of Norman Rockwell. The artists are Howard McCormick, C. C. Beall, Arthur Jameson and Ronald McLeod. The earliest cover, from Oct. 24, 1908, has a drama theme, which complements five articles inside. Billy Sunday provides the sports content, selecting his “All-America Baseball Team.” A separate article, which discusses the N.L.’s deciding game, focuses on Christy Mathewson and Larry Doyle. Vg-ex. Baseball illustrations are on the April 16, 1932; April 14, 1934, and April 11, 1936 issues. They average ex; two have the owner’s name in pencil in the upper right corner. There are two covers only: April 17, 1937 and Oct. 8, 1938; both vg, one with the owner’s name. For March 6, 1948, photography succeeds illustration; a pitcher in a Yankees uniform is pictured, ex+. Willie Mays and Gregory Peck as Ahab in “Moby Dick” share the cover of the March 4, 1955 issue. Ex. Inside, Tom Meany provides a baseball preview. Mays is also on the cover of the March 1966 Boy’s Life, ex-m. Look is the source of two baseball covers: Hank Greenberg, with an accompanying article, on the April 30, 1946, cover, and Gary Cooper as Lou Gehrig on July 28, 1942 cover. Both are vg. Greenberg is also on the cover of the Oct. 1945 Baseball Digest, ex to ex-m. Greenberg is the subject of a three-page article. Yogi Berra is on two covers, the April 1957 Saturday Evening Post, vg, and the April 1963 Boys’ Life, ex-m.

Lot 528.  49 Sports Newspapers, 1923-1979: Early Baseball Stars to 1979 World Series. Sports sections (1-29) removed from 1932-37 Oregonian newspapers with many stars: Goose Goslin, Tommy Bridges, Hack Wilson, Joe DiMaggio, Tony Lazzeri, Bucky Harris, Bobby Doerr, Bob Lemon, Leo Durocher, Dizzy Dean, Earl Averill, Mickey Cochrane, Mule Haas, Lefty Grove and Bob Feller. Other coverage involves Walter Johnson, Al Simmons, Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth. These sports sections include many photos. 30-41. Lot 529.  Babe Ruth on the Cover of the April 16, 1932 Liberty Magazine. Ruth is pictured in an illustration by Leslie Thrasher, one of the top cover artists of the 1910s-30s. Some critics believe that had he lived longer, he would have rivaled Rockwell. He was only 47 when he died from complications resulting from a fire at his home. Inside the magazine is an article on the upcoming baseball season. The magazine has a couple of chips and creases along the edges. Vg.

Lot 536.  Inaugural Issue (1939) of The Wind-Up, “America’s Baseball Annual.” Paul Gallico and Grantland Rice were contributors to this 62-page magazine, which covers major and minor leagues. Vince DiMaggio is one of the minor leaguers pictured. The publication is extensively illustrated. The covers are missing and the spine is taped. The inside pages are ex. Interesting content and a fun read.
