Boxing Cards and Memorabilia   4 Lots

Lot 129.  1938 Churchman “Boxing Personalities” Complete Set of 50. The overall condition of the set is ex to ex-m. Key cards include #12 Jack Dempsey ex-m to ex-m+, 20 Jack Johnson nm, 26 Joe Louis ex-m, 34 Max Schmeling ex and 35 Gene Tunney ex+. This is a high-quality set.
Winning Bid $291.

Lot 130.  10 Late 19th-Early 20th Century Boxing Tin Types. Bare-knuckle pugilists dominate this impressive collection. Pairs of boxers in seven of the photos are without gloves. Most of these fighters wear suits, and in two images, they even have formal hats. One does have two gloved, bare-chested brawlers. Interestingly, one of the photos, which features two fighters and three onlookers, appears to have been taken outdoors. At 2 ½” x 3 ½”, these tin types are 1/6 plate-sized. One image is unusual at 2 ½” x 4” with a dome top and a bit of color applied to the boxers’ cheeks. Four images have clipped corners, and three have border chips or minor rust. The images are generally sharp with excellent contrast. Boxing tin types are scarce, and early gloved images are harder still.
Winning Bid $220.

Lot 131.  Muhammad Ali Signature on Time “The Greatest is Gone” Cover. After 14 years of boxing dominance, an aging Ali was worn down during 15 rounds by newcomer Leon Spinks. At the time of publication, February 27, 1978, no one could know that only months later Ali would reclaim his title from Spinks in their rematch. This magazine shows an exhausted Ali in his corner. Full ex+ magazine; the cover has a label. The signature is clear in black sharpie across Ali’s white trunks. It’s a 10. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $134.

Lot 132.  30 + 1880s-1940s Newspaper Boxing Features - Sullivan, Johnson, Louis and More! Incredible cache of period boxing coverage, primarily from The New York Times, The Oregonian and The Albuquerque Herald. The newspapers are stored flat in archival poly-bags and are in exceptional condition. 1. June 16, 1946, Sunday News double-page, full-color spread of Joe Louis and Billy Conn; includes a 15” x 10 ½” photo of each fighter. Three days later, Louis knocked Conn out in the 8th round at Yankee Stadium. It was the first ever televised World Heavyweight Championship fight. Ex-m. 2. Nov. 9, 1889 The National Police Gazette, double-page engraving spread including “John L. Sullivan Saved by a Neck.” In late October of that year, Thomas F. Keefe (alias Shea) threatened Sullivan, who had called Shea a thief. Shea found Sullivan and friends at a barber shop where an ex-prize fighter, Thomas Kelly, fought Shea and finally slashed his throat with a barber’s razor in defense of Sullivan. This is a rare, period reference to that incident. Ex. 3. July 9, 1910 The Saturday Blade (Chicago IL), with an incredible front page illustration and story of Jack Johnson’s win: “Jeffries Knocked Out in the 15th: White Man Fails to Come Back and his Conqueror is Hailed the Greatest Fighter of Age.” Vg. 4. Sept. 24, 1926 “Smiling New Heavyweight Fight Champion of the World, Gene Tunney.” Ex+. 5. Sept. 23, 1927 “Tunney Retains Heavyweight Title: Dempsey Loses Greatest of Ring Battles.” Vg-ex. 6-12. 1935-36 assorted newspaper pages on Joe Louis wins over Eddie Simms, Jack Sharkey, Tony Galento, Charlie Retzlaff, Primo Carnera, King Levinsky. Overall ex to ex-m. 13. Sept. 25, 1935: 10-page collection of the Louis-Baer fight including front page and photos. Ex+ to ex-m overall. 14. June 21, 1936, 8-pages on the Louis-Schmeling fight. Ex-m. 15. June 20, 1936 Schmeling’s win, 2 pages, vg-ex. 16. Oct. 12, 1942 “Joe Louis Declares his Fighting Days are Over.” Ex-m. 17. 18 pages (May 11, 1923-July 10, 1923) covering one of the most interesting fights in history, the 1923 gitle fight between Jack Dempsey and Tom Gibbons, the first fight in which anyone ever went 15 rounds with Dempsey. Overall ex. 18. Jan. 26, 1929 “Sharkey beats Christner by close decision.” Ex. 19. July 1, 1933, Carnera standing over a knocked-out Sharkey. Ex+. 20.
