Sixteen members of the championship team autographed this ONL Feeney baseball, including Willie Stargell, who signed the sweet spot. His signature is a nm 7. Roberto Clemente signed a side panel that includes Jackie Hernandez, Luke Walker and Dave Giusti. Lot 240.  Government PC Signed by Curt Roberts, Pittsburgh’s First African-American Player. Roberts was obtained by Pittsburgh from Denver of the Western League as part of a minor league working agreement before the 1952 season. When he made his major league debut on April 13, 1954 at Forbes Field, he became the first black player in Pirates history. Thus, general manager Branch Rickey had broken the color barrier in not only one major league city, but two. In his first major league at bat, Roberts tripled against starter Robin Roberts of the Phillies. He played in 134 games during his rookie season, batting .232 with one home run and 36 runs batted in. After that, he got into only 37 more games in the next two seasons. He later became a member of the Athletics and Yankees organizations, but never again reached the big league level. Roberts died in 1969. The postcard was sent to Roberts from a young fan in 1954. Roberts returned the postcard signed “Best Wishes Always” above his name. His signature, which is highly sought after and exceedingly rare, is 10 of 10. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $270.

Lot 241.  ONL Baseball Signed by 17 1947 Pittsburgh Pirates Including Greenberg, Kiner. For a single season – 1947 – two of baseball’s best power hitters were in the Pirates’ lineup. Ralph Kiner, in only his second major league season, delivered 51 homes runs, and Hank Greenberg, in his final season, contributed 25. Greenberg signed the sweet spot of this ONL Ford Frick baseball, which is an even light-cream color and ex+ to ex-m. Greenberg’s signature is a vg-ex 4. Kiner signed on a side panel with Wally Westlake (ex-m 6), Nick Strincevich (4-5), Z (Zack) Taylor (5-6), who signed the ball twice, and Frank Gustine (6-7). Kiner’s signature is an ex 5. The other signers are Cal McLish, Clyde Kluttz, Rip Sewell, Elbie Fletcher, Jimmy Bloodworth, Dixie Howell, Bill Burwell (the Pirates’ manager), Whitey Wietelmann, Cully Rikard and Ed Basinski. These autographs range from ex 5 to nm 7. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
