19th Century Baseball & Other Sports   11 Lots

Lot 108.  1869, 1870 Harper’s Woodcut Prints Featuring the Cincinnati Red Stockings. Established in 1863 as an amateur club, the Red Stockings became baseball’s first all-professional team in 1869. Traveling the country to challenge other teams, they posted an astounding 57-0 record in 1869. Harper’s Weekly featured the Red Stockings in two of its earliest baseball prints: “The Picked Nine of the ‘Red Stocking’ Base-ball Club, Cincinnati, Ohio,” on July 3, 1869, and “Base-Ball – The Match Between the ‘Red Stockings’ and the ‘Atlantics’,” July 2, 1870. The earlier print, which measures 7 ½” x 9”, is on the top half of a complete page. The print itself is exceptionally clean and shows a couple of light creases. The page has chips and minor tears along the edges. The second print is about 6 ½” x 20 ¼” on the top half of a double-page spread. There are a couple of staple holes along the fold; otherwise, the appearance is vg-ex. These prints are Harper’s sixth and eighth baseball offerings.
Winning Bid $68.

Lot 109.  Scarce 1874 Illustrated London News Print of American Baseball in England. On July 16, 1874, players for the Athletic (Philadelphia) and Boston baseball teams set sail to play both cricket and baseball in England. The games in England apparently mark the first time baseball was played outside the U.S. Harry Wright was among the players on the tour. A print on a page from the Aug. 15 London newspaper captures baseball action. The print is about 13” x 9 ½” and displays as ex-m to nm. The page has an irregular tear along one side that is well away from the image.
Winning Bid $75.

Lot 110.  3 1888 A36 Goodwin Album Pages. . Each 5¾” x 7 ¾” album page features the fronts of cards issued in the N162 Goodwin card set. 1. Four Bicyclists. The bicyclists are Thomas Stevens, Rowe, Prince and Wood. Stevens was the first person to ride around the world on a bicycle. This page, which is free of creases, is a visual treat. The corners are rounded, and there is some staining on the blank back. The colors are strong and vibrant. Vg-ex, looks better. 2. Four Oarsmen. The oarsmen are Beach, Gaudaur, Hanlan and Teemer. There is some minor paper loss along the left edge and upper left of the page, an insignificant piece missing along the upper right corner, two small tears in the left border and some minor staining on the blank back. The cards are very colorful, and the page is free of creases. Technically g, looks considerably better. 3. Three Chess Players and Three Pedestrians. The chess players are Capt. Mackenzie, Steinitz and Zukertort, and the pedestrians, Albert, Fitzgerald and Rowell. There is some inoffensive paper loss in the upper left of the page and some minor staining on the blank back. G-vg page with cards that are strong, colorful and vibrant.
Winning Bid $100.

Winning Bid $198.

Lot 182.  1889 Athletic Sports in America, England and Australia Including Base Ball. Focusing on Al Spalding’s 1889 baseball good will tour of four continents, this 711-page book contains more than 500 pages of baseball history, including 300 pages by Chicago journalist Henry Clay Palmer on the tour itself. It also has a three-page preface by Henry Chadwick, generally regarded as the “father of baseball.” Extremely interesting read, but also valuable for its hundreds of illustrations. It contains a dozen full-page b&w photos of Baltimore, Brooklyn, Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Louisville, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Saint Louis and Washington Ball Clubs. Frontispiece is an amazing full-page chromolithograph of the Chicago and All American Team Exhibition Game at the Crystal Palace Grounds in London. Published by Hubbard Brothers, 1889, it has a g-vg cover with ex pages. The cover is somewhat loose but attached, and there is some spotting and wear to the front cover, and staining to the back. Sixteen pages are missing, including two of the chromolithographs. It remains an excellent baseball reference, and the showstopper is still intact across from the title page. We’ve seen this book offered with similar problems for $1,500. It’s a seminal book that’s exceedingly hard to findthese days.
Winning Bid $357.
