Baseball Programs   8 Lots

Lot 582.  Rare 1911 Chicago Baseball Score Book Featuring Mordecai Brown, Johnny Evers. L. Strauss & Son, a Chicago clothier, sponsored this 32-page score book, which features articles by Brown and Evers, box scores for the 1910 World Series, some statistics and the poem “Casey at the Bat.” Vg-ex.
Winning Bid $152.

Lot 583.  Program for the 1954 Baseball All-Star Game at Cleveland Stadium. This game was something less than a pitcher’s duel. In fact, 13 pitchers gave up 20 runs and 31 hits as the American League posted an 11-9 victory. Although the game featured six home runs, including two by Al Rosen, it was a single to center by Nellie Fox that drove in the winning run. Even though he never faced a single batter, Washington’s Dean Stone was credited with the win. With two outs in the eighth inning, Stone came on in relief. When Red Schoendienst, who was on third, attempted to steal home, Stone threw him out to end the inning. Larry Doby then pinch hit for Stone and tied the game with a home run. The 32-page program pictures the players individually, including Musial, Mays, Snider, Jackie Robinson, Spahn, Berra, Doby, Fox, Williams, Mantle and Ford. The program remains unscored and is ex with some stress creases along the spine and a crease in the lower left corner. Very collectible example.
Winning Bid $68.

Lot 584.  Scarce Program for the 1959 Baseball All-Star Game 1 at Forbes Field. Major League Baseball initiated its experiment with two All-Star games in Pittsburgh. The N.L. won, 5-4, as Willie Mays drove in the tying and winning runs with a triple in the eighth inning against Whitey Ford. Don Drysdale, who struck out four batters in three innings, was the game’s MVP. The 136-page program is neatly scored. The front cover is ex, while the back cover has a stain. The interior is complete, ex-m and has photos of Aaron, Mays, Banks, Musial, Mantle, Williams, and many others. Nice example of a comparatively difficult program.
Winning Bid $102.

Lot 585.  1951 Phillies at St. Louis Scorecard Featuring the 1926 World Champion Team. A color photo of the 1926 Cardinals team, which defeated the Yankees in the World Series, graces the cover of this scorecard. The printed lineup includes future Hall of Famers Stan Musial, Enos Slaughter, and Red Schoendienst for St. Louis, Richie Ashburn and Robin Roberts for Philadelphia. The scorecard is lightly scored in pencil and has two tack holes not affecting the image of the team; otherwise, vg-ex.
Winning Bid $30.

Lot 586.  1953 Bob Feller TV and Radio Baseball Scorebook. Besides multiple pages for scoring games, this booklet contains 32 pages of A.L. and N.L. schedules, major league records, articles by and about Feller and photos of players and Hall of Fame members. Four pages feature baseball broadcasters, including Mel Allen, Harry Caray, Curt Gowdy, Russ Hodges, Red Barber, Ernie Harwell, Rosey Roswell and Bob Prince. Some of the scorecard pages are scored for a local team. The majority are not. Vg-ex cover, better inside pages, and scarce.
Winning Bid $20.

Lot 587.  1959 World Series Program Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago White Sox. In 1959 the White Sox took on the Dodgers in the fall classic. The Dodgers won the World Series in 6 games. Winning Bid $92.

Lot 588.  Outstanding 1965 Twins at Los Angeles World Series Program. Extraordinary, nm, unscored program for one of the games in LA. In Los Angeles in the seventh game, Sandy Koufax threw a three-hit shutout to lead the Dodgers to the World Championship.

Established in 1899, the team plays in the International League. All programs are generic. Opposing teams are listed as visitors without pre-printed lineups. The programs are: 1959, scored in pencil, otherwise ex-m. 1960, unscored ex-m. 1961 (2), both scored, otherwise one ex-m, the other vg. 1962 scored in pencil, p-f. 1963 (3), two scored in pencil, otherwise both ex-m; the third is g-vg with pencil markings.
