Lot 305.  Time Covers Signed by Civil Rights Figures - George Wallace, Whitney Young, Etc. These individuals played varying roles in the civil rights struggles of the 1960s. Their signatures are on covers that were folded for mailing. 1. George C. Wallace (1919-98), Sept. 27, 1963 issue, ex to ex-m 5-6 of 10 autograph. Wallace symbolized opposition to school integration and civil rights for African-Americans in the early 1960s. Eventually, he moderated his positions. He was elected governor of Alabama and ran for President four times. 2. Frank Johnson (1918-99), May 12, 1967 issue, nm-m to mint 8-9 autograph. Wallace’s classmate at the University of Alabama, he became a Federal judge who made a number of important civil rights rulings that helped to end segregation in the South. 3. Whitney Young Jr. (1921-71), Aug. 11, 1967 issue, mint 9 signature. Young was an effective civil rights leader who worked tirelessly to end discrimination in employment. He headed the National Urban League and transformed it into an organization that aggressively pursued equal economic opportunities. 4. Margaret R. Smith and Guy G. Smith, Sept. 29, 1967 issue, mint 10 signatures. The issue deals with interracial marriage. Unusual, and possibly unique! Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 306.  10 Signed 1960s Time Covers – Politicians, Academics, a Diplomat, a General, Etc. Eclectic group consisting of signatures on covers that were folded for mailing. 1. Sam Yorty (1909-98), Sept. 2, 1966 issue, mint 9 signature. Colorful mayor of Los Angeles, 1961-73. 2. Robbie Risner (James Robinson Risner), April 23, 1965 issue, gem mint 10 autograph in red sharpie. Risner is a U.S. military hero. A Jet Ace in the Korean War, he was shot down in the Vietnam War and endured seven years of torture and mistreatment by the North Vietnamese. He twice received the Air Force Cross. He retired from the Air Force in 1976 as a brigadier general. Since 1977, the Air Force has awarded the Risner Trophy in his honor to its top fighter pilot. 3. Kingman Brewster Jr. (1919-88), June 23, 1967, mint 9. He was president of Yale 1963-77 and Ambassador to the United Kingdom 1977-81. 4. Robert Moses (1888-1981), June 5, 1964, nm to nm-m 7-8 signature as “R Moses.” From the 1930s through the 1950s, Moses wielded incredible power in the city and state of New York. He headed various public authorities that influenced the development of New York City. He is one of the most controversial figures in the history of urban planning. 5. Charles B. Shuman (1907-99), Sept. 3, 1965 issue, gem mint 10 autograph. President of the American Farm Bureau Federation from 1954-70, Shuman led the fight against government involvement in agriculture. 6. Thomas C. Mann (1912-99), Jan. 31, 1964 issue, signature is a 10. He was a diplomat who specialized in Latin America. From 1961-63, he was Ambassador to Mexico. 7. Edmund Bacon (1910-2205), Nov. 6, 1964, mint 9. He was an architect and urban planner known as the “Father of Modern Philadelphia.” 8. Samuel B. Gould, Jan. 12, 1968 issue, mint 9. He was chancellor of the State University of New York. 9. Francis Keppel (1916-90), Oct. 15, 1965, nm 7. He was Commissioner of Education 1962-65. 10. Gary Wilson, June 3, 1966, mint 10 dated 6-10-66. Wilson is the focus of an article on the military draft. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 307.  Autograph of Cambodian Leader Norodum Sihanouk on a Time Cover. Sihanouk ruled Cambodia from 1953-70. Since then, he has spent time in exile and in various positions, largely ceremonial, in Cambodia. In 2004, the “King-Father” cited health reasons in abdicating the Cambodian throne and going into exile, first in North Korea and then China. He has been an intriguing figure since the Vietnam War, in which he alternately sided with the U.S. and then China and North Vietnam. His personalized signature is on the April 3, 1964 issue of Time, which was folded for mailing. He signed “Sihanouk.” The signature is a mint 9. Very scarce signature. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 308.  June 9, 1967 Time Cover Signed by Levi Eshkol, Prime Minister of Israel. Serving from 1963-69, Eshkol (1895-1969) was Israel’s third prime minister. He died in office of a heart attack. He was prime minister during the Six Day War in 1967. His signature is a 10 on the cover, which was folded for mailing. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Eisaku Sato (1901-75), Feb. 10, 1967 issue, mint 10 signature in Japanese script. Prime minister of Japan 1964-72; received the 1974 Nobel Peace Prize for leading Japan to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. 2. Julius K. Nyerere (1922-99), March 13, 1964, nm-m 8 signature. First president of Tanzania, 1964-85. 3. I. Douglas Smith (Ian Smith), Nov. 5, 1965, mint 9. First prime minister of Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, 1965-79. 4. Ludwig Erhard (1897-1977), Nov. 1, 1963, mint 9. West German chancellor 1963-66. 5. Kurt Georg Kiesinger (1904-88), Dec. 9, 1966, signed “Kiesinger,” nm 7. West German chancellor 1966-69. 6. Maurice Couve de Murville (1907-99), Feb. 7, 1964, signed “Maurice Murville,” mint 9. French politician, diplomat, foreign minister; prime minister 1968-69. 7. Sean Lemass (1899-1971), July 12, 1963, personalized 5-6 signature. Prime minister of Ireland 1959-66; considered the “architect of modern Ireland.” 8. Ayub Khan (1907-74), Sept. 17, 1965, mint 9 dated 4-11-68. Pakistan president 1958-69. Commander-in-chief of the Pakistani army who staged a bloodless coup in 1958. 9. Fernando Belaunde (1912-2002), March 12, 1965, signed “Belaunde,” nm-m 8. President of Peru 1963-68 and 1980-85. 10. William Bennett, Sept. 30, 1966, mint 9 signature on a two-page cover spread. Lot 310.  6 Autographs of German Leaders Including Willy Brandt. The signatures of Brandt (1913-92) are unlined index-style cards. Each has a photo of Brandt attached. Brandt was the Chancellor of West Germany 1969-74, and he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1971. Two photos, each about 4” x 6”, were signed by Erich Honecker, and two others by Helmut Schmidt (possible autopens). Honecker (1912-94) led East Germany from 1971-89. He died in exile in Chile. Schmidt succeeded Brandt and held office until 1984. Also, a Konrad Adenauer photo bearing a printed signature. Also present are two transmittal letters to the original collector from a German staffer dated 1976 and 1977. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 311.  3 Different Time Magazine Covers Signed by British Prime Minister Harold Wilson. The autographs are 10s on the covers of issues for Oct. 11, 1963; April 30, 1965, and Nov. 24, 1967. These covers were folded for mailing. A leader of the Labour Party, Wilson (1916-95) served as Prime Minister from 1964-70 and 1974-76. He was the longest-serving Labour Prime Minister. Lot 312.  Time Covers Signed by Religious Leaders – Bishops Pike, Cushing, Kennedy, Etc. Covers only; they were folded for mailing. 1. Michael Ramsey, Archbishop of Canterbury, Aug. 16, 1963 issue, 9 of 10 signature. He signed “Michael Canterbury.” Archbishop from 1961-74, he was active in the ecumenical movement. He died in 1988. 2. Gerald Kennedy, May 8, 1964, personalized 9. Elected a Methodist bishop in 1948 at the age of 40, then the youngest bishop in church history, he became president of the Methodist’s Council of Bishops in 1960. He wrote a substantial number of religious books. 3. Richard Cardinal Cushing, Aug. 21, 1964, 10 of 10 signature. He was Archbishop of Boston and a close friend of President John F. Kennedy. He died in 1970. 4. James Pike, Nov. 11, 1966, mint 9. Charismatic and controversial American Episcopal Bishop who supported the Civil Rights movement. He died in 1969. Lot 313.  Time Magazines Signed by Astronomers, Space Explorers. The signatures, which grade 9 or 10, are on covers (only) that have been folded for mailing. 1. Chris Kraft, personalized signature, Aug. 27, 1965 issue. Kraft was NASA’s first flight director. He played a key role in establishing the Mission Control operation. 2. William Pickering (1910-2004), July 23, 1965 issue. Born in New Zealand, Pickering headed the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for 22 years and made significant contributions to NASA’s unmanned space-flight programs. 3. Maarten Schmidt, March 11, 1966 issue, is a Dutch astronomer who emigrated to the U.S. He identified the first quasar. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 314.  May 28, 1965 Time Autographed by Michael DeBakey, Pioneering Heart Surgeon. Still active at the age of 99, DeBakey follows his motto “Strive for nothing less than excellence.” He was one of the first to perform coronary artery bypass surgery. In 1963, in recognition of his work, he received the Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research. He also has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Medal of Science and the Congressional Gold Medal. He has operated on more than 60,000 patients. Among them is former Russian President Boris Yeltsin, who called DeBakey “a magician of the heart.” Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 315.  Time Cover Signed by Executives of the Big 3 Auto Maker Including Henry Ford II. Harlow H. Curtice, head of General Motors, and L. L. Colbert, Chrysler chairman, also signed the cover of the May 12, 1958 issue bearing their images. The autographs are personalized. Curtice was Time’s “Person of the Year” in 1955. Frenchman who headed the International Monetary Fund 1963-73. 12. Norton Simon (1907-93), June 4, 1965, ex-m to nm 6-7. Millionaire industrialist and philanthropist.
