Lot 114.  Excellent Autographed Portrait of Carl Hubbell. In baseball history, no doubt a few left-handed pitchers were better than Hubbell. Lefty Grove, Sandy Koufax and Warren Spahn are possible examples. But none of them ever equaled one of Hubbell’s accomplishments – striking out Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Joe Cronin in succession. Hubbell did it in the 1934 All-Star Game. Winner of 253 games against 154 losses in 16 seasons with the New York Giants, he was enshrined at Cooperstown in 1947. He loved baseball, and after his playing days, he worked in the Giants’ front office. He was director of their farm system in the 1950s-60s. Originally a third baseman, he moved to the outfield in 1931 after suffering a back injury. He subsequently played for Pittsburgh, Chicago and Brooklyn. He hit .311 lifetime. He died in 1981. Lot 119.  8” x 10” Color Photo Signed by Harold “Pee Wee” Reese. Reese played a key role in Jackie Robinson’s acceptance by his Brooklyn Dodgers teammates. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1984 and passed away in 1999. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 121.  J. G. (Taylor) Spink Signed Typed 1944 Letter on The Sporting News Letterhead. Spink transformed The Sporting News from a struggling enterprise into “the Bible of baseball.” He served as its publisher from 1914 until his death in 1962. He routinely did battle with Judge Landis. The Hall of Fame honored him by creating an award that carries his name to recognize journalists who make outstanding contributions to baseball. Dated Dec. 21, 1944, the letter contains baseball content. In it, although he was a stickler for accuracy, Spink misidentifies Tony Mullane as a 300-game winner who is not in the Hall of Fame, Actually, Mullane finished with 284 victories. He still is on the outside looking in, but others Spink lists are enshrined at Cooperstown. The letter has been reinforced with tape and has various chips along the edges. Spink signed, as he normally did, with a flourish that appears to be “J. G. Spink.” The fountain pen signature grades nm-m 8. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Minimum Bid $50.
