Opening Plays

Lot 16.  Rare 1969-70 Pittsburgh Pipers 6” x 8” American Basketball Association Pennant. The Pipers were a charter member of the ABA, which debuted in 1967-68. Led by league MVP Connie Hawkins, the team captured the ABA’s first championship. After spending 1968-69 in Minnesota, the Pipers returned to Pittsburgh for the 1969-70 season. The colorful pennant is a rare memento of that season. Beautiful and nm-m except for the clip at the tip.
Winning Bid $480.

Lot 17.  Outstanding Collection of 29 Basketball Hall of Fame Autographs. These autographs are mint 9s and gem mint 10s, and not personalized, on unlined 3” x 5” index cards unless otherwise noted. Some have sentiments such as “Good wishes” added. Players: Arizin, Barlow (1896-1983), Barry, Brennan (1900-89), Chamberlain (1936-99, hurried “Wilt” signature in red sharpie), Endacott (1902-77, on a small team photo), Foster (1906-96, H. E. “Bud” Foster), Gale (1907-96, Lauren “Laddie” Gale), Gola, Hagan, Howell, Kurland, Lucas, Macauley, Pollard (1922-93), Robertson (signed “Big O”), Schmidt (1911-86), J. A. Also: “Subby” Byas (2), Dierking (2) (pers.), Guren, Bobby Jones (Bulls) (pers.), Nash, John M. Nelson, Sanders, Schaus, Selvy. Forty autographs, many of obscure, deceased Hall of Fame members, with outstanding break-up value! Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $100.

Lot 18.  Official Labatts Beer 2004 Display of 30 Mini Stanley Cups. The Canadian beer company provided this 33” x 33” x 3 ½” framed display to its key distributors. On three shelves, it houses 30 mini Stanley Cups, each featuring the logo of an NHL team. Centered beneath the shelves and also in the lower left and right areas of the display are three plaques promoting Labatt Blue and Tuesday night hockey. The 30 mini Stanley Cups constitute a complete set. For the public, Labatts provided one cup in each case of beer. Cups of new entrants in the NHL apparently were more difficult to obtain. Some home-made displays have surfaced. This is an original from Labatts. Impressive! Nm.
Winning Bid $300.

Lot 19.  Rare 1928-29 Boston Garden Official Program Focusing on NHL Pioneers, Boxing. Hockey is literally front-and-center in this 64-page program that is extensively illustrated with photos. Both the Boston Bruins and the Harvard hockey team are featured. It was only four years earlier that the Bruins had become the first NHL franchise in the U.S. The program contains a Bruins team picture, as well as three pages of individual photos with brief biographical sketches. Among the notables pictured are Art Ross, Eddie Shore, Dit Clapper, Harry Oliver and Cooney Weiland. Six pages are devoted to Harvard and amateur hockey. Two pages summarize the 1927-28 NHL season, and standings for the 1924-25 to 1927-28 seasons are presented. The center spread contains the lineups for a Harvard-Dartmouth game. Boxing also receives substantial attention, with photos of Jack Dempsey, “Honey Boy” Finnegan, Joe Dundee, Gus Sonnenberg and Mickey Walker. The program has been vertically folded, and there is some damage to the upper right of the front cover and first six inside pages. Rare program with great artwork on the cover and outstanding content.
Winning Bid $200.

Lot 20.  Authenticated Boris Karloff Signature Dated 1951, Frankenstein Photo. Karloff became a star by playing Frankenstein’s monster in the 1931 movie “Frankenstein.” He reprised the role in “Bride of Frankenstein” (1935) and “Son of Frankenstein” (1939). In the 10 ¼” x 12 ¼” matted and framed display offered here, a 5” x 6” black and white photo shows Karloff as the monster. Below the photo is a large pencil cut with his signature. The cut measures about 1 ½” x 5” and grades nm-m 8 with a slight stain behind the “B.” Below the autograph is the notation: “Boris Karloff, Fall 1951.” Letter of Authenticity from James Spence. Authenticated also by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $242.
