Baseball Periodicals and Other Publications   15 Lots

Lot 641.  June 20, 1903 Sporting Life with a Composite of the Chicago Cubs on the Cover. Complete issue has photos of Tinker, Evers and Chance on the front cover, along with other members of the 1903 team. The inside is packed with baseball information, and there are interesting ads with a baseball theme. The paper is fragile, and the issue shows chips and some tearing. The composite displays nicely.
Winning Bid $248.

Lot 642.  1908 Harper’s Weekly Cover with William Jennings Bryan as a Baseball Player. Bryan was the Democrat’s candidate for President in 1908, and the cover of the Oct. 31 issue depicts him in a batting pose. Text below his image reads “Three Strikes and -,” no doubt referring to Bryan’s two previous unsuccessful attempts to capture the Presidency. Inside, Bryan is bludgeoned in an opinion column, which compares him to Peter Pan because of his alleged failure “to reach a state of intellectual maturity.” In November, Bryan fanned for Strike Three, losing to William Howard Taft. As a Presidential candidate, he was out. Complete ex issue with a few edge tears. Great cover!
Winning Bid $45.

Winning Bid $204.

The 1929 issues have player photos inside the front and back covers; they include Manush, Lyons with Thomas, Walsh with his son, Alexander, Mack, the A’s and Cubs, and Joe McCarthy. Babe Ruth’s 500th home run is the subject of an Oct. article; he is pictured in the April and Nov. issues. Lou Gehrig is shown in a cartoon in the June issue. The Nov. issue includes an article on the possibility or radio broadcasts of World Series games. The Dec. issue recaps the Series. These issues are complete and average vg. Three articles clipped from The American Magazine are by Lardner. Topics are Ty Cobb, the “greatest of ‘em all,” the Boston Braves and Lardner’s selection of an All-Star team. Fullerton, who wrote Touching Second with Johnny Evers, focuses on batting in two articles from the same magazine. In one, he identifies Honus Wagner as the greatest batter and baseball player in the world. The article contains an excellent photo of Cobb.
