Lot 491.  1940s N.Y. Baseball Writers Programs – One Signed by Stevens Family Members. The Stevens family? Yes, the Stevens family. They’re as much a part of the National Game as the hot dog. In fact, they made the hot dog a ball park staple. It all began with Harry Stevens, who emigrated from England to Ohio in 1882. He established a food business, and by the dawn of the 20th Century, he held the concession for the Polo Grounds in New York. Because of his efforts, hot dogs, peanuts and soda replaced ice cream and lemonade as the foods of choice at baseball games. He also produced scorecards. Stevens became a millionaire. He left the business to his son Frank when he died in 1934. Frank then managed the business with three brothers, Joseph, Hal and William. All four signed the cover of the 1941 Baseball Writers’ program honoring them. The program has back damage and otherwise is vg; the signatures are 10s. The second program is for a comedy event staged by the writers. Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia participated. Vg+. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
