Hockey Memorabilia, Autographs   30 Lots       »

Lot 130.  1928 Wedgwood Plate Depicting a Hockey Game at St. Paul’s School. This 10 3/8” creamware plate has a red transferware picture of a hockey game at St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire, site of the first hockey game played in the U.S. The secondary school is also noted for alumnus Hobey Baker, the first famous U.S. hockey player. In the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, the school established itself as a hockey powerhouse, taking on collegiate teams from Harvard and Yale. Malcom K. Gordon of the school’s Athletic Association imported the game from Canada in 1884 and put the rules to paper: 11 players on a side, goal posts 10 feet apart, played with a “block” (the puck). The first U.S. game was played on St. Paul’s Lower School Pond, which once held nine hockey rinks. Gordon later coached Baker, an outstanding athlete who is in the Hockey and College Football Halls of Fame. The back of the plate is marked in red with “St. Paul’s School 1928. A Hockey Game,” “Wedgwood, Etruria, England” and “Sole Importers, Jones, McDuffee & Stratton, Boston.” Impressions on the back also say “Wedgwood,” “Made in England” and “SL29.” According to an employee, St. Paul’s has used Wedgwood as dinnerware for many years. The plate has some minor crazing on the back only. It is free of chips and cracks. A beautiful, historical display piece of hockey history.
Winning Bid $185.

After being stitched up, Plante returned to the game wearing a mask, which he had sometimes worn in practice. Reluctantly, Canadiens coach Toe Blake allowed Plante to continue using the mask.
