Football Autographs and Other Memorabilia   15 Lots

Lot 115.  Game-Used 1970 Philadelphia Eagles Helmet Autographed by Chuck Bednarik. The last of the great two-way football players, Bednarik signed the top of this Riddell helmet in black sharpie. The autograph is a mint 9. Bednarik added “HOF 1967” below his name. He was a two-time All-America at the University of Pennsylvania. In 14 pro seasons, he missed only three games and, in some seasons, averaged 58 minutes per game. He was an All-Pro seven times and played in eight Pro Bowls. The helmet, which has a face guard and shows good game use, was worn by Steve Preece, a defensive back out of Oregon State who played for the Eagles 1970-72. His name and “1970” are inside the helmet. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Minimum Bid $400.

Lot 116.  Signed Photos of Chicago Bears Hall of Fame Greats Sid Luckman, “Bulldog” Turner. In 1939, Geoge Halas convinced the Pittsburgh Steelers to draft Luckman second overall and then trade him to the Bears. At first, Luckman had little interest in pro football. Intrigued by the challenge of a new offense and tempted by Halas’ $5,000 salary offer, Luckman joined the team. Soon, he mastered an offense that revolutionized football. Only Sammy Baugh of the Washington Redskins had the passing skills to match Luckman. Teammate Turner, coming out of little known Hardin-Simmons University, was the Bears’ first-round draft pick in 1940. At first, Turner didn’t want to be on the Bears. It turned out that the Detroit Lions’ owner had paid him $200 to “get his teeth fixed” and turn down other teams’ proposals. Tampering was frowned upon even then. As a result, the Lions were fined $5,000, and the Bears got a great two-way player. Teammate George Musso once said of Bulldog: “Who knows what kind of player he would have been if he ever got to rest during a game?” The two 8” x 10” black and white photos are individually matted and framed to about 12” x 14”. Both signatures are 10s. Photos are both ex and display even better. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $180.

The autograph in black sharpie is a 9. Bonus #3: 11” x 17” laminated cardboard ad for Steeler Pin-Ups in the Sunday comics section of The Press. The 6 ½” x 8 ½” black and white photo technically is vg-ex and looks better. Caption attached. Original images of Kinnick are uncommon. He was killed in World War II.
Winning Bid $148.

Lot 125.  Unique 11” x 12 ½” Bas-Relief Bronze Image of Ernie Davis. The Ernie Davis story is a sad one. Like Jim Brown, Davis was a star running back at Syracuse. After winning the Heisman Trophy in 1961, he was drafted #1 by the Cleveland Browns. He died from Leukemia shortly thereafter. This unique work of art is mounted on a 15” x 18” wood background. It serves as an attractive tribue to Davis.
Minimum Bid $275.

Lot 126.  1930s “Home Coming” Football Banner. Wonderful display features a vintage, stylized football player in red, white and tan against a stark black background. Cloth banner, which is 23 ½” x 35 ¼”, shows no signs of fraying or wear. It does have some wrinkles that can easily be ironed out before the banner is framed or otherwise displayed. Bright, colorful display, ex-m.
Winning Bid $102.

Lot 127.  Vintage Rawlings Black Leather Suspension Helmet. The size 6 3/4 Rawlings Model A11 helmet is ex-m+ with the original chin strap. Very displayable example of a 1930s-40s leather helmet.

Lot 128.  White Sears Football Helmet Endorsed Ted Williams. This size 6 3/4 - 6 7/8 helmet has a hard plastic outer shell with the center section of the exterior covered in white leater. It is a well-constructed suspension model with substantial padding on the inside. Ex+ with a lineman’s face mask and original chin strap.
Winning Bid $175.

Lot 129.  27 Different 1974 and 1975 World Football League Programs. Twenty-three are from 1974. Created to challenge the NFL, the WFL lasted one full season and most of the second. Despite its financial problems, it featured some excellent coaches – Tom Fears, Jack Pardee, Marty Schottenheimer and John McVay, for example. The league also fielded some fine football players at either the end or beginning of their careers – Leroy Kelly, Larry Csonka, Paul Warfield, Anthony Davis, Calvin Hill and Danny White. These 1974 programs cover about one-fifth of the WFL’s 1974 games. They have a white background at the top, which tends to show rubbing very easily. This condition aside, these programs average ex-m. The programs are for: Philadelphia Bell, Memphis Southmen and New York Stars at Chicago Fire. Florida Blazers, Birmingham Americans, California Sun at Detroit Wheels. Jacksonville Sharks, Birmingham and Portland Storm at the Honolulu Hawaiians. Southern California and Houston Texans at Memphis. Florida at New York. Southern California, Memphis, Jacksonville, the Hawaiians, Florida and Shreveport Steamers at Philadelphia. The Hawaiians (2 different), Birmingham and Southern California at Portland. One issue focuses on NFL players who will join the WFL in 1975. The 1975 programs are for: Southern California at Hawaiians. San Antonio Wings at Philadelphia. San Antonio at California. Jacksonville Express and Portland Thunder at Chicago.
Winning Bid $185.
