Lot 204.  Framed Baseball Magazine Covers of Lefty Grove and Mickey Cochrane represent an interesting story. Both Hall of Fame players entered the game in 1925. Both played for the Philadelphia Athletics. Both were members of the 1929 and 30 World Series winning team. Grove was a fiery competitor with a blazing fastball who hated to lose. In nine of 17 seasons, his ERA was the American League’s best. Known for his fiery temper, Cochrane was known to join teammate Grove in tearing up locker rooms after difficult losses. The March 1930 cover with Grove has slight black- ink overprint at the top. The August, 1929 cover with Cochrane is an illustration by Granville Fisher and appears nm. Matted and framed together, the covers measure 26 1/2” x 17 1/2” overall and offers a stunning display piece for the Philly A’s collector. Both are full magazines.
Winning Bid $107.

From the 1920s well into the 1950s, Dispatch News Service and its competitors distributed thin-paper posters featuring the day’s news and sports events. In a 14”x 17” poster dated Oct. 7, 1927, Gehrig slides safely into home in the first game of the World Series at Pittsburgh. He is pictured in an inset set against a general view of Forbes Field. The Yankees won the opener, 5-4. Vg, displays as ex with great eye appeal. Winning Bid $75.

Lot 206.  1927 World Series Poster Featuring Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. The poster is a composite of five photos: 1. Gehrig, Col. Ruppert, Miller Huggins and Ruth in a discussion before the game. 2. Pittsburg pitchers, Lee Meadows, Vic Aldridge, Roy Kremer, Carmen Hill and John Miljus. 3. Lloyd Waner scoring the first run in the first inning. 4. Koenig of the Yankees making a single in the first inning. 5. George Pipgras, “hero of the second game.” With Ruth batting .400 and driving in seven runs, the Yankees swept the Pirates in four games.
