Lot 198.  Baseball Classic: 1911 First Edition of The Book of Baseball by William Patten and J. Walker McSpadden. This oversized hardback book (11” x 15 ½”) is one of the first great illustrated books on the National Pastime. It offers a history of baseball, presents illustrated stories on the game’s star players, covers the 1910 season, reports on the minor leagues and previews the 1911 season in 160 pages. During the past 95 years, the covers have aged with some creases, stains and scuffs. The interior is complete and has stains along the edges that generally do not affect the photos and text. Here’s a copy to read and enjoy, well worth our MB $175.

Lot 199.  Scarce Autobiography of Baseball Pioneer and Hall of Fame Player Cap Anson, who didn’t spare any words in creating a title for his book: A Ball Player’s Career: Being the Personal Experiences and Reminiscences of Adrian C. Anson, Late Manager and Captain of the Chicago Baseball Club. First edition hardback, 1900, from Era Publishing. Vg copy with the front end-page loose. Baseball’s first real superstar, Anson was controversial too. This book provides interesting insights on his view of the game and life.

Lot 200.  Rare Stated First Edition of Stan W. Carlson’s Lou Gehrig: Baseball’s Iron Man. Carlson’s self-published book appeared in book stores in 1940. The author writes admiringly of Gehrig, who is pictured in a series of plates throughout the 126-page book. The dust jacket is absent, and the red boards have a number of scuffs on the front and several on the back. The binding is tight, and the interior is nm.

Lot 201.  All 3 Volumes of One Thousand Sport Stories by Al Spink, Sporting News Founder. Spink published all three in 1921. Born in Quebec, Canada, he moved with his parents after the Civil War to Chicago. There, he developed an interest in baseball. In 1875, he moved to St. Louis, where he was instrumental in establishing the American Association St. Louis Browns. In 1886, he founded The Sporting News, which he sold to his brother Charles in 1895. After that, he wrote for the Evening Post and created one of the first baseball histories. Knows as the “dean of American sport writers,” Spink covers the world of sports widely in his Sport Stories. Baseball is a major focus, but he writes also of Bobby Jones, George Gipp, Bill Tilden, Jack Dempsey, skater Charles Jewtraw, billiards players, race horses and wrestlers. Each story is brief, covering several pages at most. Each volume is an illustrated hardbacof 475-500 pages. Vg-ex books, no dust jackets. Plenty of enjoyable, informative reading here.

Each first-edition paperback volume of this groundbreaking work covers a different era and card type. These are the original individual volumes: 1. “Volume 1 – 19th Century Cards,” 1983, ex. 2. “Volume 2 - Early Gum & Candy Cards,” 1984, ex+. 3. “Volume 3 – 20th Century Tobacco Cards, 1909-1932,” 1986, ex. Accompanying these volumes are the first four years of Lipset’s newsletter in a single softbound volume, The Old Judge: The First Four Years (1985-88). First edition, 1989, ex. Also included are 10 issues of Lipset’s catalog, from #2 in the Spring of 1991 through #14 in late 1993 or early 1994.
