19th Century Baseball   5 Lots

Lot 38.  1886 Original Pen-and-Ink Caricature of Adrian “Cap” Anson. This attractive 10 ½” x 14” original drawing, dedicated to Anson, originated with the Anson family. It pictures him wearing his White Stockings uniform and holding a laurel wreath reading “Champions 1886.” It was almost certainly published in 1886. It has long been a practice for newspaper artists to present originals of artwork to featured subjects as a token of respect. Signed “McCutheon” in the lower right. It has light staining along the bottom border, corner chips and tape repairs. When properly matted and framed, this unique artwork will make a wonderful display. Period pieces like this rarely surface!
Winning Bid $390.

Lot 39.  UPDATED DESCRIPTION: Scarce 1898 National Copper Plate Premium of Cap Anson. These engraving prints, about 9” x 12”, turn up infrequently. This is the only example we have seen of the greatest player of the 19th century. It has various tears, chips and creases. The image of the well-attired Anson displays extremely well. The premium of Anson is the most desirable in the National Copper Plate issue. THE LEFT BORDER OF THIS PREMIUM IS NARROWER THAN THE RIGHT, AND IT APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN TRIMMED. WE SEE NO EVIDENCE OF TRIMMING ELSEWHERE.
Winning Bid $840.

Lot 40.  Oct. 13, 1883 New York Clipper with Philadelphia Athletics Players on the Cover. Text below the Clipper logo reads, “The Oldest American Sporting and Theatrical Journal.” The front cover features members of “The Athletic Club Winners of the American (Association) Championship.” Pictured individually in ovals, they wear formal clothing. A brief biography of the team and each player is found on the inside pages. Among others, Harry Stovey is pictured. The issue shows some slight chipping and staining. Someone has written “1883” at the top of the front cover. There also are some “x” marks in blue on some of the internal pages. The publication is complete, and it has the potential to be a superior display piece.
Winning Bid $185.

Lot 41.  1892 Color Supplement Featuring the Brooklyn Bridegrooms. Eventually, the National League Bridegrooms became the Dodgers. Members of the 1892 team are pictured individually in rectangular color photographs that make up this composite. Second baseman John Ward is in the center of the 7 ½” x 9 ½” supplement. Directly to his left is first baseman Dan Brouthers. Others pictured are Collins, Foutz, Hart, Griffin, Daly, Burns, O’Brien, Inks, Stein, Kinslow, Corcorun, C. Dailey, “Brickyard” Kennedy and Terry. The composite has been pasted onto a scrapbook page that has other period items on the reverse. Hart’s name is chipped away from the top of his photograph. There is some minor creasing and staining. This extremely desirable item retains a great deal of eye appeal and value.
Winning Bid $327.
