Autograph of Perfect-Game Pitcher Charlie Robertson.

Lot 430. Autograph of Perfect-Game Pitcher Charlie Robertson. In only his second or third major league start (sources disagree), Charles Culbertson Robertson hurled a perfect game for the Chicago White Sox. In the game on April 30, 1922 at Navin Field in Detroit, Robertson shut out Ty Cobb, Harry Heilmann and the rest of the Tigers’ lineup on 90 pitches. Left fielder Johnny Mostil preserved the win with a diving catch. Robertson’s perfect game was the fifth in major league baseball and the third in the American League. It was the first perfect game on the road. After the game, sore loser Ty Cobb howled that Robertson had doctored the balls he pitched. In response, the Tigers sent several game balls to Ban Johnson, A.L. president, who could find no evidence of tampering. This game was the highlight of Robertson’s career, who lasted through eight big league seasons, winning 49 and losing 80. He died in 1984. Robertson’s ballpoint signature, “C. C. Robertson,” is on a 1” x 3” cut from a check. It rates a 10. Authenticated by Kevin Keating. This signature for your perfect-game autograph collection could be yours for our MB $25.
