Lot 655. 1961 Dick Tracy Hand Puppet. Tracy was the detective hero of a newspaper comic strip produced by Chester Gould from 1931-77. He was an intelligent detective who used science, advanced gadgets and good police procedure to bring an array of villains to justice. Tracy wore a two-way wrist radio, as the puppet does, long before micro-technology made the cellular phone possible. The puppet shows light wear on the hat, and there are a couple of spots on the cloth body. Ex-m.

Lot 656. 1933 Buffalo Bill Jigsaw Puzzle Premium from Cocomalt. The R. B. Davis Co. of Hoboken, N.J. produced the chocolate-flavored drink. In 1933, each one-pound can came with a puzzle. This puzzle apparently is incomplete in its original envelope, although we didn’t put it together. The envelope says the puzzle consists of 65 pieces; we counted 59. The envelope itself is worth collecting; it pictures Buffalo Bill on the front and has a Cocomalt ad on the back. It looks better than its technical grade of f. The puzzle pieces are ex-m.

Lot 657. First and Last Issues of Life Magazines, First Issue of Holiday. Life debuted on Nov. 23, 1936 with a 96-page issue that featured a photograph of a dam at Fort Peck, Montana, on the cover. Inside, a lengthy article with numerous photos dealt with the Treasure State. Ex issue without a label. The magazine’s last regular issue, featuring “The Year in Pictures 1972,” was dated Dec. 29, 1972. Two copies, one ex, one ex-m+. The travel magazine Holiday made its first appearance in March 1946. Vg+ issue shows a map of China on the cover. The magazine from Curtis Publishing contains 124 pages of travel features and advertising.

Lot 658. 1937 Liberty Magazine with an Article by Amelia Earhart on Women and Flying. In this Feb. 13 issue, Earhart addresses the question, “Are American Women Holding Aviation Back.” Noting that many women are reluctant to allow their husband to fly, let alone fly themselves, she promotes the safety and convenience of air travel for men and women alike. Of course, the safety of the airlines was much more problematical then. As a sidebar to the article notes, 31 people were killed in five crashes from Dec. 15, 1936 to Jan. 15, 1937. Only five months after the article appeared, Earhart would disappear during her attempt to fly around the world. Vg-ex issue.

Lot 661. 1930s to Early 1940s “1-Cent Cigarettes” 1000-Punch Punchboard. The green “Lucky Strike” cigarettes pack illustrated here dates the punchboard as a pre-1942 game of chance. That’s when the signature “Lucky Strike” package was changed from green to white. Vg-ex board with 999 of the 1000 punches unused, and an excellent vintage display piece.

Lot 662. 11 1940s Sports, Non-Sport Transfers Plus a Joe Palooka Booklet of Transfers. Printed on 3” x 7 ¼” rice paper, the larger transfers, apparently from the 1940s, include a football player, Dick Tracy, Tarzan, G.I. Joe, the Lone Ranger, Mairzy Doats, Barnacle Bill and others. G-vg to ex with a staple hole at the top. The Joe Palooka booklet, printed in Japan, contains 36 colorful transfers. The transfers are unused, and the three pages are vg to vg-ex.

Lot 663. 1940s Photos Featuring Denis Morgan, George Austin, Henry Bussey, Etc. These photos are from the collection of Jimmy Bigelow, “The Banjo King,” and his wife, Martha. They generally are about 4 ½” x 6 ½”, sepia and average g. Bigelow is in most of the photos. Morgan was one of the premier actors of the 1940s and 1950s. Although he retired in the late 1950s, he continued to do cameos until 1980. Austin is best known as the writer of “My Blue Heaven.” His recording alone sold 12 million copies. Bussey was a popular band leader and excellent trumpet player. Herb Alpert credits him with influencing his hit recording “The Mexican Shuffle.” Bussey and his band are pictured in an 8” x 10” sepia photos. Bigelow is shown with various individuals in the four other photos.

Lot 666. 75 Programs, Primarily 1940-50s, for N.Y. Theatre Productions, Cultural Events. Programs are for Broadway theatres, Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Opera and Radio City Music Hall. Forty copies of The Playbill are from the 1940s or 1950s; 19 are more recent. The earlier programs cover such productions as My Fair Lady (Julie Andrews, Rex Harrison), Kismet, Picnic (Paul Newman), The Sound of Music (Mary Martin), Annie Get Your Gun (Ethel Merman), Life with Father, Peter Pan (Boris Karloff), and Brigadoon. Lot 667. 15 Periodicals Focusing on Churchill. Sir Winston Churchill was one of the most important leaders of the 20th century. Because of his leadership, Britain successfully resisted the German onslaught in World War II. In 2002, he was named the Greatest-ever Briton in a BBC poll. Erudite as well as politically astute, he won the 1953 Nobel Prize in literature for his books on world history and the English language. He died in 1965.
