Lot 409.  Sports Illustrated Issue #1 with the 1954 Topps Card Insert. Dated Aug. 16, 1954, the inaugural issue of SI shows Milwaukee slugger Eddie Mathews on the cover. Inside, besides broad coverage of the sports world, the periodical features 27 Topps cards, printed front and back on magazine stock. Accompanying the three-page insert is an article on the battle between Topps and Bowman over the right to package and sell gum and baseball cards. The insert is nm-m. Among the players are Mays, Kluszewski, Mathews, Snider, Jackie Robinson, Ashburn, Hodges, Doby and Ted Williams. Ex magazine without a label.
Winning Bid $148.

Lot 410.  Scarce Sports Illustrated Second Issue with the Yankees “Card” Insert. Dated Aug. 23, 1954, this second issue, with golf as its cover theme, is tougher to find than the first. The cover has a mailing label and is vg-ex; two inside pages have edge stains, and the contents otherwise are ex. The very collectible 1954 Topps Yankees insert, which includes Mickey Mantle, has a nm appearance. The fronts and backs of the cards are printed, and the Mantle “card” has a very light creaseon the back.
Winning Bid $148.

Lot 411.  April 11, 1955 Sports Illustrated with the National League Topps Card Insert. Ex issue has Willie Mays, Laraine Day and Leo Durocher on the cover. Inside are six 1955 Topps cards of N.L. players printed on magazine paper. The cards, printed front and back, are of Ernie Banks, Dick Groat, Warren Spahn, Karl Spooner, Danny Schell, Wally Moon, Ray Jablonski and Dusty Rhodes. The insert is nm.
Winning Bid $138.

Lot 412.  April 18, 1955 Sports Illustrated with the American League Topps Card Insert. Ex+ issue has Al Rosen and Bill Loeb on the cover. Smith, Ferris Fain, Bob Turley, Rosen, Bob Keegan, Frank Sullivan and Roy Sievers. The insert is nm.
Winning Bid $204.

Lot 413.  Sports Illustrated First, Second and Fiftieth Anniversary Issues. The issues are dated Aug. 15, 1955; Aug. 20, 1956, and July 14-21, 2003. The first two anniversary issues reproduce the original SI cover, which featured an action photo of Eddie Mathews. The label has been removed from the first anniversary issue, which otherwise is ex-m. The second anniversary issue is nm. Inside is a beautiful three-panel foldout of thoroughbreds, including Citation, Native Dancer and Tom Fool. Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays adorn the cover of the 50th anniversary issue, which provides a broad retrospective on the world of sports.
Winning Bid $25.

Lot 414.  June 15, 1970 News Stand Sports Illustrated with Steve Prefontaine as a freshman runner for Oregon University. SI devotes four pages to Prefontaine and Bill Bowerman, his legendary coach and an innovator who became a co-founder of Nike. Prefontaine was, arguably, the United States’ greatest distance runner. At the peak of his career, he held every American track and field record from 2,000 to 10,000 meters. Two of his records remain unbroken. He died in a rollover car accident in 1975 at the age of 24. Desirable ex-m magazine with a small, light surface crease and without a mailing label to interfere with the outstanding photo of Prefontaine.
Winning Bid $113.

Lot 415.  1958 Sports Illustrated Baseball, World Series Issues + “Big League Secrets.” The five-part “Secrets” series is complete with articles attributed to Sal Maglie on pitching, Roy Sievers on hitting, Del Crandall on catching, Gil McDougald on playing the infield and Richie Ashburn on fielding and base running. These issues and the Baseball and World Series issues average ex with labels. 7 issues.
Winning Bid $30.
