After winning the 1964 U.S. Open, Venturi was named SI’s “Sportsman of the Year.” He is shown on the cover of this issue as the author of an article on the 1966 Open. Lot 369. Masters Champion George Archer on the Cover of the April 21, 1969 SI Issue. Archer was one of golf’s best putters. Injuries limited his success. After he died in 2005, his wife revealed that a severe learning impairment limited his reading ability to very simple sentences. He could write only his name, which is written in sharpie and rates a 10 on the cover of this ex issue. Authen- ticated by Kevin Keating.
