Sims signed the Sept. 22, 1980 SI Cover and added “#20 80-R.O.Y.’” Leading the nation in rushing at Oklahoma in 1978, he won the Heisman Trophy. He finished second to Charles White in 1979. Rice led Notre Dame to a perfect season and a national championship in 1988. With Rice at quarterback again in 1989, the Fighting Irish lost only one game, and Rice was a Heisman Trophy runner-up.
