Lot 330.  1955 Issues of Sports Illustrated Signed by Doak Walker and Skeeter Werner, Walker’s wife. Doak’s signature on the Oct. 3 issue in blue sharpie rates 10 of 10. Walker was a Hall of Fame halfback for SMU and then for the Detroit Lions. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1948. His wife, an Olympic skier, also signed in blue sharpie, “Skeeter Werner Walker.” Her signature on the Nov. 21 issue is also a 10. The issue with Doak is ex+, and the issue with Skeeter, nm. Gladys “Skeeter” Werner Walker was the oldest child in the famous Werner family that included Olympians Buddy and Loris. She completed in the 1956 Olympics. She met Doak while teaching him to ski in 1968. Ironically, Doak died in 1998 of complications from injuries he received in a skiing accident. Skeeter died in 2001. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 331.  Nov. 4, 1957 SI Signed by Bobby Cox, Minnesota Gophers Quarterback. Cover only, vg. Growing up poor in Washington state, Cox starred in basketball, football and track at Walla Walla High School. After two years at the University of Washington, he transferred to Minnesota, where he led the Golden Gophers to a 6-1-2 record in 1956. His Minnesota coach, Hall of Fame member Murray Warmath, said, “I never had anybody who wanted to win more than he did.” He played professionally in the CFL and for the Boston Patriots. After football, he built a $55-million travel company. Cox died in 2003. Blue sharpie signature is 10 of 10. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 333.  Autograph of Football HoF Player Tommy McDonald on the Oct. 8, 1962 SI. McDonald has been overshadowed by players who have put up bigger number in longer seasons with a more pass-oriented game. In the 1950s to mid-1960s, however, he was one of the most feared receivers in the NFL. Opponents typically designed their defenses to stop him. Sharpie signature is a 10 on an ex-m issue with a label. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 335.  Dec. 16, 1963 SI Signed by Tobin Rote, San Diego Chargers’ Quarterback. Perhaps understandably, Rote is among pro football’s forgotten stars. After all, he never put up numbers that rival those of Dan Marino or Fran Tarkenton. But he did accomplish twice what the two Hall of Fame quarterbacks could not. He quarterbacked two teams to championships - the NFL Detroit Lions in 1957 and the AFL Chargers in 1963. He was the only quarterback to win NFL and AFL titles. Rote died in 2000. His sharpie 10 signature is on the cover of an ex-m issue. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 337.  Dennis Gaubatz Autograph on the Nov. 29, 1965 SI Cover. Front cover only. A Baltimore Colts linebacker, Gaubatz signed in sharpie. His signature is a 10. Gaubatz was a leader of the Colts’ defense. He played at Louisiana State. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 341.  SI World Football League Cover Autographed by Paul Warfield. Along with Miami’s Larry Csonka and Jim Kiick, Warfield jumped to Memphis of the short-lived WFL for the 1975 season. This cover (only) of the July 28, 1975 issue shows Warfield with the two teammates. His sharpie signature is a 10. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 342.  Signatures of Cowboys Randy White and Harvey Martin on the Jan. 23, 1978 SI. The defensive linemen celebrate Dallas’ Super Bowl triumph. White was enshrined at Canton in 1994. One of the great defensive ends, Martin died of cancer in 2001. Ex issue with a label. Sharpie signatures are 10s. Auth-enticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 343.  SI Signed by Billy Sims, Heisman Trophy Winner and NFL Rookie of the Year. Sims signed the Sept. 22, 1980 SI Cover and added “#20 80-R.O.Y.’” Leading the nation in rushing at Oklahoma in 1978, he won the Heisman Trophy. He finished second to Charles White in 1979. Detroit’s first pick in the 1980 draft, he was named the NFL Rookie of the Year by UPI and the Offensive Rookie of the Year by AP. Cover only, g-vg, very strong sharpie 10 autograph.
