Lot 272. Sept. 16, 1945 Life Autographed by Army’s Glenn Davis and Doc Blanchard. Together, they were known as the “Touchdown Twins,” and they won back-to-back Heisman Trophies. Blanchard, “Mr. Inside,” was named the nation’s top college player in 1945, and Davis, “Mr. Outside,” captured the award in 1946. They led Army to three consecutive national championships. Their coach, Red Blaik, called Blanchard “the quickest starter I ever saw” and Davis, “the greatest halfback I ever knew.” Davis died last year. Lot 273. 1947 Life Color Cover Signed by Notre Dame Heisman Winner Johnny Lujack. After starring for the Fighting Irish and winning the Heisman Trophy in 1947, Lujack played quarterback and defensive back for the Chicago Bears for four seasons. He signed the Sept. 29, 1947 issue of Life in blue sharpie, and his signature is a 10. He is in the College Hall of Fame. Prior to the 1950s, Life seldom printed color covers. Lot 274. 1948 Life Color Cover Signed by SMU Heisman Trophy Winner Doak Walker. A member of both the Pro and College Halls of Fame, Walker led SMU to an unbeaten season in 1948 to earn the Heisman award. After college, he starred at halfback for Detroit. He died in 1998. Walker’s blue sharpie signature is on a rare color Life cover without a lable. Almost all of the magazine’s covers were printed in black & white in the 1940s. Lot 330. 1955 Issues of Sports Illustrated Signed by Doak Walker and Skeeter Werner, Walker’s wife. Doak’s signature on the Oct. 3 issue in blue sharpie rates 10 of 10. Walker was a Hall of Fame halfback for SMU and then for the Detroit Lions. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1948. His wife, an Olympic skier, also signed in blue sharpie, “Skeeter Werner Walker.” Her signature on the Nov. 21 issue is also a 10. The issue with Doak is ex+, and the issue with Skeeter, nm. Gladys “Skeeter” Werner Walker was the oldest child in the famous Werner family that included Olympians Buddy and Loris. She completed in the 1956 Olympics. She met Doak while teaching him to ski in 1968. Ironically, Doak died in 1998 of complications from injuries he received in a skiing accident. Skeeter died in 2001. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 331. Nov. 4, 1957 SI Signed by Bobby Cox, Minnesota Gophers Quarterback. Cover only, vg. Growing up poor in Washington state, Cox starred in basketball, football and track at Walla Walla High School. After two years at the University of Washington, he transferred to Minnesota, where he led the Golden Gophers to a 6-1-2 record in 1956. His Minnesota coach, Hall of Fame member Murray Warmath, said, “I never had anybody who wanted to win more than he did.” He played professionally in the CFL and for the Boston Patriots. After football, he built a $55-million travel company. Cox died in 2003. Blue sharpie signature is 10 of 10. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

McDonald has been overshadowed by players who have put up bigger number in longer seasons with a more pass-oriented game. In the 1950s to mid-1960s, however, he was one of the most feared receivers in the NFL. Opponents typically designed their defenses to stop him. Lot 335. Dec. 16, 1963 SI Signed by Tobin Rote, San Diego Chargers’ Quarterback. Perhaps understandably, Rote is among pro football’s forgotten stars. After all, he never put up numbers that rival those of Dan Marino or Fran Tarkenton. But he did accomplish twice what the two Hall of Fame quarterbacks could not. He quarterbacked two teams to championships - the NFL Detroit Lions in 1957 and the AFL Chargers in 1963. He was the only quarterback to win NFL and AFL titles. Rote died in 2000.
