Lot 190.  Andover Academy, Williams College Baseball Team Photos from the late 19th century. Both are sepia. The Andover photo is 4 1/2” x 7” and nm. The 1880s Williams photo is about 7” x 9”. It appears to have been trimmed from a cabinet photo. Ex. Both photos exhibit great clarity and strong contrast.

Lot 191.  Gorgeous Early 1900s Sepia Photo of the “Mercury” Baseball Team. Outdoor photo includes vintage gloves, mushroom bats and catcher’s equipment. Nm photo is 7 ½” x 9 ½” matted and framed without glass to 11 ½” x 13 ½”. The focus and contrast could not be better. Outstanding!

Lot 192.  Vintage Sepia Photo of the Holyoke Baseball Team with a Horseshoe for Good Luck. The players are lined-up in this posed studio photo, which includes vintage bats, a ball -- and a horseshoe resting in a glove. The photo is 7” x 10” matted to 11” x 14”. Minor foxing and a light stain along the bottom. The horseshoe makes this photo especially unusual, interesting and collectible.

Lot 193.  Turn-of-the-Century Photo of a Team with Spalding Bats, Vintage Equipment. The studio photo of this baseball team is crystal-clear. Nm 7 ½” x 9 ½” photo on a 12 ½” x 16” plain mount, which has chips in three corners and a tear. Given the quality of the photo, who notices the mount?

Lot 194.  Cabinet Photo of a 1903 York (Pa.) Area Baseball Team with Vintage Equipment. The photo, 6 ¼” x 8 ¼” on an 8 ½” x 11” mount, pictures 16 well-dressed team members with ring bats, vintage gloves and an array of hats. The mount indicates they are in Brookside Park, a trolly park in Dover Twp. near York. Photo by Harry G. Miller of York has a small scuff; mount has a chipped upper left corner. Sharp photo with strong contrast.

Lot 195.  1907 Photo of the Champion Uhlirs Team, Apparently of Racine, Wisconsin. Nicely executed cabinet photo by the Leonard Studio of Racine features a 7 ½” x 9 ½” photo set against an 11” x 14” mount. Printed in silver at the top of the black mount is “Uhlirs, City League, Season 1907.” At the bottom, the individuals in the photo are identified in silver. The team was named for the owner, Frank Uhlir. Ex-m photo, ex mount.

Lot 197.  George Brace “Bra-Mac” Numbered Set of 288 Photos of 1930s Baseball Players. Brace issued an array of colorized photos in the 1940s-60s. These blank-backed photos, 3 ½” x 5”, feature bright colors. Each is numbered on the front in white on red; the same color is used for the date. The player’s name is in white against a red or gray background. These sets are especially desirable because they are attractive and because they feature many obscure players. Each player is identified on the front, and the date of the photo is provided in most cases. These sets are a treasure trove for collectors seeking photos of players who are not household names. The stars here include Alston, Campanis, Averill, Sam Chapman, Reese (1940), Trosky, Riggs, Tommy Holmes, Galan, Lombardi, Lopat, Borowy, Boudreau, Hamner, Brecheen, Pesky, Ruffing, Slaughter, Blackwell, Doerr, Kell, Bauer, Joost, Arft, Dark, Grimm, Ott, Gordon, Valo, Stankey, Roe, Hemus and Kluszewski. Lot 844.  9 1940s-80s Wire Photos Including Gibson, Rose, Grimm, Burgess. 1. A 1964 Central Press wire photo shows Bob Gibson and his wife in a new Corvette given to Gibson by Sports Illustrated as the World Series MVP. Ex-m with some retouching. 2. A 1976 AP wire photo pictures Pete Rose and Joe Torre, vg+ to ex, somewhat light contrast. 3. In a 1941 Acme photo, Charlie Grimm, Jimmie Wilson and Hank Lieber question the judgment of the umpiring crew, vg. 4. Smokey Burgess in a retouched 1957 photo from the Reds, tear at the top, great photo. 5-9. Kansas City Royals photos, vg-ex to ex, from the 1970s and 1980s including John Mayberry, Frank White, Amos Otis, John Wathan, Jim Schaffer and Marty Pattin. In a 1974 photo, former Olympic miler Wes Santee leads the Royals in running exercises at spring training. Photos are 7” x 9” or larger.

Lot 845.  3 Photos of Detroit Tigers Hopefuls -Tom Fletcher and Les Filkens. Fletcher, a pitcher, made it to the Tigers for two innings in 1962. Filkens, an outfielder, did not. A 1962 UPI wire photo pictures Fletcher as a U. of Illinois sophomore who had just signed with Detroit for a $50,000-$65,000 bonus. Vg+ to ex. Filkens is shown in two 1975 Detroit Daily News photos. Vg and vg+. Photos are about 8” x 10”.

Lot 846.  1920s Original Photos of State of Indiana Athletes - Oral Hildebrand, Dorsey Kight. These rare original photos are each about 4 ¾” x 6 ½”. A member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, Hildebrand starred in basketball and baseball at Southport High School and then at Butler University, 1926-30. In 1931, he started a baseball career that lasted for 10 seasons with the Indians, Browns and Yankees. He posted an 83-78 career record and pitched in the 1939 World Series. The photo apparently pictures him as a high school player in 1926. Vg+ to ex. Kight played center field on the 1925 Lowell, Ind., baseball team. The photo has a horizontal crease, a vertical crease and two small holes outside the image area. Try finding these athletes on EBay!

Lot 847.  36 Wire Photos - Mrs. Lou Gehrig, Kids Playing Baseball, Models, Fans, Broadcasters, senior citizens, etc. Eclectic assortment. Photos are generally 7” x 9” or larger and average vg-ex. A 1948 International New photo shows Mrs. Gehrig presenting the Lou Gehrig Memorial Trophy to a New York City baseball player. Several areas of paper loss; g+. Thirteen photos show Little League, American Legion, high school or sandlot players. In 1959, Toby Greene, Oklahoma State coach, is the college “Coach of the Year.” In 1967, an Ohio U. baseball player is the school’s elected beauty queen. Three photos show fans at major league games. Baseball attracts short shorts or bathing suits in three photos, including “Miss Baseball of 1953.” In three other photos, players re-create 19th Century baseball. Senior citizens, women softball players and blind softball players are the subjects of four photos. In 1977, an 88-year-old fan, who had attended every game since the Dodgers began playing in Los Angeles, shows off some of her ticket stubs. Jack Perry is in a 1943 photo; he is considered to be “the Man Who Taught Hawaii to Play Baseball.” Writers or broadcasters are in five photos, including Curt Gowdy (2).

Lot 848.  6 Photos Pertaining to Chicago’s Andy Frain, “Usher King of the World.” From little beginnings, Frain grew a national empire that provided ushers for the Kentucky Derby, airlines and political events. At the age of 12, Frain was renting seat cushions to White Sox fans at Comiskey Park. At the age of only 20 in 1924, he used his ushers to solve the Chicago’s hockey team’s problem with gate crashers. William Wrigley, Jr., loaned Frain $5,000 to buy uniforms for his ushers at Wrigley Field. At its peak, his usher service had offices in 26 cities. In a 5” x 6 ½” photo, Frain is shown as he appeared in 1938. The other photos are at least 8” x 9”. One shows Frain’s wife, he was called as a witness in a 1942 court case. His son appears in a 1964 photo, and his son’s wife, in a 1957 sepia print. In a 1960 photo, Frain receives an award. Frain is pictured also at a funeral mass for his wife, who was killed in a commercial airline crash. Chicago Mayor Daley can be seen in this photo. Frain passed away in 1964. His company continued in various forms into the mid-1990s. Some photos are vg, and others are vg-ex. One is g-vg with an edge tear and surface cracks.

Lot 849.  18 Wire Photos of Owner Charles O. Finley and Other Kansas City Athletics. The photos trace Finley’s baseball career from 1961-70. They deal with such topics as Finley’s efforts to move the KC Athletics to Louisville, the Athletics’ move to Oakland, a pay dispute with general manager Frank Lane and his efforts to buy the Oakland Seals NHL team. Finley is pictured with Joe Cronin in one photo. Other photos from the 1960s picture Pat Friday, KC general manager, and Whitey Herzog. The photos are generally 7” x 9” or larger and vg-ex.
