Lot 484.  5 Pioneering Sports Collector Guides - the First Printing of Beckett’s First Book. In 1979, Dr. James Beckett and Dennis W. Eckes published their first “Sport Americana Baseball Card Price Guide.” Later copies of this guide with the familiar “Baseball Card” typeface are scarce. An earlier first printing is downright rare. Designated ISSN 0190-1389, a copy of the first printing is offered here in ex-m+ condition. It contains a color insert not included in the later version, ISBN 0-529-05689-5. Accompanying this copy are: 2. “Sport Americana Baseball Card Price Guide No. 2,” 1980, third printing, vg-ex. 3. “The Sport Collectors Bible” by Bert Randolph Sugar, 1977, second edition, third printing, vg-ex. 4. “Sports Collectors Digest Baseball Card Price Guide,” 1987, first edition, unused in the original shrink wrap from Toys R Us. 5. “Beckett Monthly Baseball Card Price Guide,” Vol. 1, No. 2, with cards of Mickey Mantle and Cal Ripken on the cover. Lot 485.  173 Issues of “The Trader Speaks” Starting with #3. Issues of this pioneering hobby publication provide insights concerning the development of the hobby. They also contain useful information on various sets. Three issues are from 1969 - #3, 5 and 7. Beginning with January 1970, the collection is complete through March 1984. Each year consists of 12 issues, except 1971, which is complete at 11. Under new ownership, the publication folded in 1985. A few issues have writing on the cover or inside. Otherwise, they average ex+, with many better.

Ted’s stand-in is on the cover of the 3/2/57 Saturday Evening Post by Norman Rockwell, g-vg. Williams is on three other SI covers, 7/8/68 ex-m, 7/18/77 ex and 4/16/90 nm-m, no label. Lot 755.  1908 Combination Baseball Scorecard & Fan as a Catcher’s Mitt Die-Cut. The unused scorecard is superimposed on the die-cut stiff-paper catcher’s mitt, which is 8 ½” x 8 ½” and attached to a 12” stick. The reverse reads: “Boys, Keep the score on this Fan and after the score on the way home don’t forget to stop at 8 Daniel Street, AT P. DULBIS.” Made by Bay State Calendar Co., Boston.

Lot 756.  3 Vintage Baseball-Related Publications, One with a John J. McGraw Article. Rare here is the April 1911 Metropolitan Magazine, which has classic baseball artwork on the cover. Inside is an illustrated 11-page article by New York Giants manager McGraw on the upcoming season. Preceding the article is an “All-Star” squad selected by the publication based on statistics. Some choices may surprise you. The publication is complete with a stain at the top and chips and small tears on the cover. Accompanying this magazine is the May 1924 Sporting Life, vg-ex with “75c” written on the cover. Jim Thorpe and Willie Hoppe are among the champions pictured inside. The back cover of the April 24, 1937 Liberty has a full-page ad featuring Lou Gehrig. Inside is an article titled “Inside Dope on the Pennant Races - The Managers’ Forecast.”

Lot 757.  25 Issues of Chicago Cub News from 1936-57. Published by the Cubs, each issue contains information on the current season. The first issue offered, Vol. 1, No. 7, from Aug. 19, 1936, contains a facsimile letter from President Franklin Roosevelt praising baseball on the 60th anniversary of the National League. Edge chips, tears along the folds, all text is intact. The other issues are a mix of vg+, vg-ex and ex with folds as mailed. The list: 1938 (2 issues), 1939 (2), 1940 (2), 1947 (1), 1949 (1), 1950 (1), 1951 (2), 1952 (2), 1953 (3), 1954 (2), 1955 (1) 1957 (5, two duplicates). The issues picture Cubs stars such as Gabby Hartnett, Billy Herman, Dutch Leonard, Ernie Banks, Gene Baker, Larry French, Stan Hack and Moe Drabowsky. Excellent Cubs history.

Lot 758.  1939 Cincinnati at New York Game 2 World Series Program. This 32-page program contains small photos and brief biographical sketches of players for each team. The Yankees swept this series. In Game 2, Monte Pearson limited the Reds to two hits. The program covers are separated from each other and detached. The inside pages are ex, and the scorecard portion is lightly scored in pencil. Vg-ex appearance.

Lot 759.  1942 Boston Red Sox Scorecard with Ted Williams in the Lineup for a game with Detroit. Williams won the 1942 Triple Crown. Nice ex example.

Lot 760.  Rare Program for a 1948 St. Louis Browns at Gloversville Glovers Exhibition Game. Representing Gloversville and Johnstown, N.Y., the Glovers competed in the Class C Canadian-American League. The exhibition game wasn’t exactly a pitchers’ duel. The Browns won, 24-11, in a contest with 39 hits, four errors and six home runs. Names were added in pencil to the scorecard. The program is vg+ to ex.
